If a PS Plus game shows a price, Buy, or View Product instead of Download, don’t buy it again yet. The usual causes are that the Store is showing a different version or edition, you’re signed into the wrong account, or the game’s license is not being recognized. First check Game Library > Your Collection on the account that claimed or purchased it. Then confirm the game’s PS Plus entitlement and version before restoring licenses.
A price is not proof the game has been deleted or that your license has expired. A padlock is a related but different symptom: it can indicate a license problem, but a lapsed subscription or a title leaving the Game Catalog can also remove access. The fix depends on which kind of entitlement you had.
What does a price instead of Download mean?
It usually means the PlayStation Store is presenting a purchasable product listing, not necessarily that your account has lost every right to the game. The listing may be for a PS5 version when you own the PS4 version, a deluxe edition when you own Standard, or the retail copy when your library contains a PS Plus claim. A mismatch between the store page and your entitlement can make a game look unavailable even when the correct copy is in your library.

Sony says a padlock can mean there is a problem with the game’s license, while its restore-licenses guidance also cautions that a padlock used as a reason to restore licenses is not related to PlayStation Plus subscription expiration. In practice, check both the account’s license and the subscription or catalog status before deciding what happened.

- Price, Buy, or View Product: check whether the Store is displaying the right platform, edition, and entitlement.
- Padlock or Cannot use this content: check the claiming account, PS Plus status, catalog listing, sharing settings, and license recognition.
- Game missing from the library: check transaction history, hidden games, account, and console sharing before assuming it was removed.
Sony’s troubleshooting advice is to verify the license and account first. That distinction matters: restoring a license may help a purchased or claimed game that the console fails to recognize, but it cannot renew a lapsed membership or bring back a catalog game that has left.
What should I check before restoring licenses?
Start with the account and entitlement, then check the exact version the Store is offering. These checks can prevent an unnecessary purchase or a restore attempt that cannot fix the actual problem.
- Sign in to the claiming or purchasing account. A game claimed on one PSN account may not appear as owned on another. On PS5, check Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History for a purchase or claim record. A receipt is useful evidence of which account obtained the game.
- Open your library instead of relying on the public Store page. Go to Game Library > Your Collection. On PS5, use L1/R1 to switch between library tabs, including the PlayStation Plus tab where available. Look for the title there before using the Store’s paid listing.
- Check the platform badge and edition. If the library entry says PS4 but the Store page is for PS5, or if the Store defaults to Gold, Digital Deluxe, or Complete while you own Standard, the displayed price may be for a different SKU. From the game’s … (More) > Select Version menu, choose the version you own. If Sony offers a free PS5 upgrade, it may appear there with a price of $0.00.
- Identify how you obtained it. A purchased game, a monthly Essential game, and a Game Catalog title have different access conditions. Check the next section before renewing, restoring, or buying.
- Check PlayStation Network service status. If account or Store services are having an outage, wait for it to clear before repeating account or download steps. Sony’s status page is status.playstation.com.
Does the game need an active PS Plus subscription?
That depends on how you obtained it. Monthly games claimed through Essential generally require an active PlayStation Plus subscription to play, while Extra, Premium, or Deluxe Game Catalog games require both the matching membership tier and the title’s continued presence in the catalog. A standard Store purchase is tied to the purchasing PSN account and is not dependent on an active Plus subscription.
| How you got the game | What must be true for access | What a price or lock may mean |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly PlayStation Plus game (Essential) | The game was claimed on the account, and its PlayStation Plus subscription is active. | If membership lapses, access can be suspended until renewal. Restoring licenses does not reactivate the membership. |
| Game Catalog (Extra, Premium, or Deluxe, depending on region and plan) | The account has the matching active tier, and the game is still in that region’s current catalog. | A title can leave the catalog while the membership remains paid. Restoring licenses cannot restore a catalog entitlement after removal. |
| Paid Store purchase | The purchasing account has the license; a compatible version or edition must be selected. | The Store may be showing a different SKU, or the console may need its license refreshed. |
Catalog availability changes, so a past appearance in the catalog is not proof that the game is still included now. Check Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide for the current catalog and your region. If it is an Extra, Premium, or Deluxe title and no longer listed, renewing or restoring licenses will not make that catalog copy playable again. Your options are to wait for a possible return or buy the matching Store version.
Keep the account and tier details in mind when checking a lock on another household profile, too. The claiming account may have access while a second user does not, particularly if Console Sharing and Offline Play is disabled on PS5 or the account’s PS4 is not set as its primary console.
How do I restore licenses on PS5 or PS4?
Restore licenses after confirming that the account should still have access. Sony says restoring licenses does not affect saved data. The option refreshes the console’s recognition of account entitlements; it does not renew Plus or restore a game that left the catalog.

- On PS5, use Settings: open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Select the relevant license or licenses: Sony’s current support guidance says to select the licenses you want to restore. Menu presentation can vary with console software; some users may see a list limited to installed games rather than a single restore-all choice.
- Or restore one game from its tile: highlight the game on the Home screen or in Game Library, press the controller’s Options button, then choose Restore License.
- On PS4: open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses, then select Restore.
- Recheck the library: return to Game Library > Your Collection, select the correct platform version, and try downloading from there.
Sony lists a padlock, an unlocatable game or add-on, and a crashing game among reasons to restore licenses. If the game remains locked after a restore, don’t repeat it indefinitely. Recheck the entitlement and move to account sharing, system software, and database troubleshooting.
Why does the Store still show a price after I restored licenses?
Because restoring licenses cannot correct every Store-page mismatch. A successful restore may refresh what the console recognizes while the public listing continues to advertise a different version, edition, or paid SKU.
The Store is showing PS5, but I own PS4
Look for the PS4 badge in Your Collection, then open … (More) > Select Version and choose the PS4 copy. A PS4 entitlement does not automatically mean the PS5 version is included. If the publisher offers a free PS5 upgrade, select that specific option; it may be shown as $0.00. Don’t assume a price for the PS5 copy means your PS4 license is missing.
The Store is showing a deluxe edition
Check whether your entitlement is Standard while the product page has selected Gold, Digital Deluxe, Complete, or another bundle. Use Select Version or the product’s edition menu to locate the edition listed in your library. Pay only if you deliberately want to buy a different edition and have confirmed what it includes.
The game is a PS Plus claim, but the Store offers a paid copy
Return to Your Collection and locate the claimed version. A Store page can show the commercial purchase option even when the account acquired a Plus version. Make sure you are browsing on the same account that claimed the title; another account’s library does not establish ownership for yours.

The digital game was deleted
Deleting the installed files does not normally delete the account’s license. Find the game in Your Collection and reinstall it from there. If it is absent, check transaction history, hidden games, account identity, and sharing before concluding that the entitlement is gone.

What if the game is locked on another profile?
Check the account that claimed or bought the title and its console-sharing setting. A game can work on the entitled account yet show a lock to another local user when sharing is not enabled for that console.
On PS5, sign in to the purchasing or claiming account and open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play, then choose Enable if it is not already enabled. One PSN account can enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on only one PS5 at a time. If it is enabled on a different console, the other console may not provide the same shared access.
On PS4, the equivalent check is whether the account has activated that console as its primary PS4. Sony recommends checking these sharing settings if the game still does not work after restoring licenses. If the account owner can play but another profile cannot, sharing is a more likely lead than a missing license on the owner’s account.

What if the game is missing from Your Collection?
A missing title is different from a title that appears with the wrong price. Confirm that you are on the account that obtained it, then check transaction history and hidden games before trying a download again.
- Review transaction history on the purchasing or claiming account for the game or PS Plus claim.
- Check whether the game has been hidden in the library. Sony notes that games hidden in the Game Library are hidden on all consoles.
- Confirm Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5 or primary PS4 activation if another user owns the game.
- Restore licenses, then revisit Your Collection and search for the title again.
If the transaction history does not show the entitlement and the game is not currently available through the account’s Plus plan, the console cannot infer ownership from a Store page or an old installation. Resolve which account or entitlement was used before considering a purchase.
What should I do if the correct game still will not download?
Once you have confirmed the right entitlement and version, work through Sony’s download troubleshooting sequence. These steps address a stalled download or console-side recognition problem; they do not reverse a catalog removal or subscription lapse.

- Check for a service issue at PlayStation Network status and wait if an alert affects Store or account services.
- Update system software. On PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Install an available update and retry.
- Check free storage. Use Settings > Storage to inspect available console space. From a product page reached via Game Library > … (More) > View Product, Sony also directs players to check minimum free space. Here, View Product is a way to inspect product details; it is not an instruction to pay for a listing that does not match your entitlement.
- Pause and resume the download. If that does not help, cancel and delete the stuck download from the download queue, then start it again from Your Collection. Deleting the queued download is not the same as deleting the license.
- Rebuild the database in Safe Mode if needed. On PS5, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes Clear Cache and Rebuild Database; on PS4, use Rebuild Database. Follow the console’s Safe Mode instructions carefully and choose the named maintenance option, not a reset or reinstall option.
- Contact PlayStation Support if the issue persists. Provide the error code or exact message, a clear sequence of what you did, the time of an attempted access, and a screenshot or video. Those details help distinguish an entitlement issue from a download or console error.
For the specific download/install error CE-106487-6, Sony’s listed recovery path includes restoring licenses, deleting the queued download, retrying, and then rebuilding the database in Safe Mode if needed. If that code is not shown, use the recovery steps for the error or message actually displayed.

There have been reports of a specific license-overwrite problem when a player previously claimed a game as an Essential monthly game and later downloads the same title through the Extra or other Game Catalog tier. Reporting in October 2025 described the newer, temporary catalog entitlement replacing the older monthly claim, so the game could lock when it later left the catalog. The reports are not an official Sony explanation, and Sony’s support pages cited here do not document a repair for this behavior.
One reported example involved Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which had been an Essential monthly game in August 2022. The reported sequence was that downloading the later catalog copy could overwrite the earlier entitlement. If you know you claimed a game as an Essential monthly title, check that claim in Your Collection before adding the same game from the catalog. Do not assume a restore will recover an Essential entitlement if the catalog copy has overwritten it; the public reporting does not establish an official restore procedure.
If this may have happened to your account, save the transaction or claim history and contact PlayStation Support with the title, the dates or approximate sequence, the account involved, and the lock or error shown. Avoid adding the catalog copy again while you are checking an existing Essential claim. This is distinct from a routine license-cache issue, wrong edition, or expired subscription.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should I renew, wait, or buy the game?
Make that decision only after you have established which entitlement you had and whether it still exists. Renewing, waiting, and buying solve different cases; none is a substitute for selecting the correct SKU or restoring a valid license.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Renew PlayStation Plus if the game is an Essential monthly claim and the account’s membership has lapsed. Confirm the correct account and plan first.
- Wait for a possible catalog return if the game was an Extra, Premium, or Deluxe catalog title that is no longer listed. A paid membership alone does not guarantee access to every past catalog game.
- Buy the matching Store SKU if you have confirmed that the account has no active entitlement and you want the game now. Match the platform and edition you intend to play; a price may apply to only one version or bundle.
- Do not buy yet if Your Collection contains the claimed or purchased copy, transaction history confirms it, or the Store is showing the wrong version. Resolve that mismatch first.
Restore Licenses is a troubleshooting step for a license the account should still have. It is not a way to recover a dead membership, a removed catalog entitlement, or a different product edition.

How we picked the troubleshooting order
The sequence starts with the least disruptive explanations that can change what the price button means: account identity, library location, version, edition, and Plus entitlement. It then moves to Sony’s documented license restoration, sharing settings, software and download recovery, and Support escalation. This order separates a Store SKU mismatch from a true loss of access and avoids presenting a repurchase as a license-repair step.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will restoring licenses delete my saved games?
No. PlayStation Support says restoring licenses does not affect your data. Saved-game backups and license restoration are separate matters.
Can I download a PS Plus game after my subscription ends?
An Essential monthly claim is not the same as a paid Store purchase; access to those Plus games is tied to an active subscription. A standard digital purchase remains associated with the purchasing account independently of Plus.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why can I play a locked game on one PS5 account but not another?
The playable profile may be the account that claimed or bought it, while access for other local profiles depends on Console Sharing and Offline Play being enabled on that PS5. Also check that the account has not enabled sharing on a different PS5.
Does deleting and reinstalling a game remove or repair its license?
Deleting the installed files does not normally remove the account’s license, but reinstalling cannot create an entitlement the account lacks. If access should exist, start the download from Your Collection after confirming the correct account and version.
