OpenPrintTag is an open NFC data standard for storing filament-spool information on a tag, but it does not make every 3D printer compatible automatically. A device needs an NFC reader and software that can interpret the format. Prusa says the tag can carry details such as material, color, print settings, and remaining filament, and can be read or updated locally.

What OpenPrintTag is—and what it is not

Prusa Research introduced OpenPrintTag as an open NFC standard for smart filament spools. The project also describes possible use with resin containers and other materials. Its purpose is to make spool data portable rather than tied to a single brand’s proprietary system. Prusa’s explanation of the launch and intended uses is in its launch announcement; the OpenPrintTag project site links to its specification and implementation resources.

The distinction matters: OpenPrintTag defines a way to encode information, not a universal reader built into every printer. Compatibility depends on the specific tag, the reader hardware, and software that supports the format. An open specification makes third-party implementations possible; it does not confirm that a particular printer or filament brand supports it.

What information a tag can carry

Prusa says an OpenPrintTag can store material type, color, selected print settings, and an estimate of the filament remaining. Keeping that information on the tag allows a compatible reader to identify a spool without a Wi-Fi or cloud connection. Prusa also describes rewriting tag data—for example, updating the remaining-filament value.

Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber Black 1.75mm 800g NFC 3D Printer Filament
  • [HIGH-PERFORMANCE CARBON-FIBER PC BLEND] Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber combines polycarbonate with carbon fibers for strong, rigid and heat-resistant prints. Ideal for demanding technical components, functional parts, automotive applications and engineering projects.
  • [EXCELLENT STRENGTH, TOUGHNESS & HEAT RESISTANCE] PCCF delivers high mechanical resistance and withstands temperatures up to 113 °C, making it suitable for components exposed to heat, impact, wear and demanding operating conditions.
  • [EXCELLENT DIMENSIONAL STABILITY] Carbon fibers improve dimensional stability compared with standard PC Blend, helping reduce warping and allowing larger technical models to be printed with reliable shape retention.
  • [HARDENED STEEL NOZZLE REQUIRED] Carbon fibers are highly abrasive and can damage a standard brass nozzle. Use a hardened steel nozzle for reliable long-term printing with Prusament PC Blend Carbon Fiber.
  • [NFC-ENABLED SPOOL & PRUSAMENT QUALITY CONTROL] The redesigned spool features an OpenPrintTag NFC tag containing essential material data that can be read with the Prusa mobile app, even offline. Each spool is manufactured and tested in-house with guaranteed ±0.04 mm precision.

That does not necessarily mean the printer tracks filament automatically. Automatic updates require an integration that can write data back to the tag; otherwise, the tag may simply retain the value last entered.

How to read or write a tag

Prusa’s Knowledge Base describes scanning a tag with the NFC Reader in PrusaApp: open the reader, choose Scan, and hold a phone near the tag. This is Prusa’s documented app workflow, not a guarantee that every phone, app version, or tag will work. The same instructions mention a writing app such as NFCTools or the OpenPrintTag generator for configuring data. See Prusa’s OpenPrintTag instructions for the described steps.

ANYCUBIC Reusable Filament Spool, Detachable & Easy to Use, Replacement Spool, 196 x 67mm, Fit for All 3D Filament
  • Reusable Filament Spool, Reduce Waste: Anycubic reusable spools use ABS materials to enhance durability and prolong their lifespan.
  • Secure Locking Mechanism: The redesigned threads provide better fixation of flanges to prevent filament entanglement and printing errors.
  • 80℃ High-temperature Resistant: ‌Anycubic Reusable 3D Filament Spools support high-temperature filament drying up to 80℃, compatible with most current 3D filament dryers.
  • Highly Compatible with Spooless Filaments: Designed with spool dimensions compatible with mainstream standards, it supports the majority of spooless filaments available on the market.
  • Easy to Install: To engage the locking mechanism, align the latch, press firmly, and rotate one flange until you hear a "click."

For a printer to read spool data directly, it needs a compatible NFC reader and firmware or other software that recognizes OpenPrintTag. Prusa’s October 31, 2025 announcement said app reading was due to begin the following Monday, app writing on November 18, and readers for most Prusa printers were planned for Q1 2026. Those were announced rollout dates; the available official information here does not independently verify that the planned printer-reader rollout shipped. Check support information for the exact printer model before relying on direct printer compatibility.

Choosing between a pre-tagged spool and a blank tag

Option What you get Setup and compatibility considerations
Prusament spool with OpenPrintTag Prusa’s launch announcement said newly manufactured Prusament spools would include tags and have spool information available on them. Confirm that the particular spool is tagged and that your phone, app, or printer can read OpenPrintTag. The launch article said other manufacturers were testing or interested, but did not identify confirmed third-party products.
Blank writable OpenPrintTag A tag you can apply to an existing spool and configure with spool information. Requires user setup; Prusa cautions that blank tags are not plug-and-play. You also need a suitable NFC-capable phone or reader and writing software. Prusa’s product page lists a 10-pack; when accessed on September 28, 2026, it displayed $5.55, a price that can vary by region and time.

Prusa’s blank OpenPrintTag product page lists the writable tags and setup caveat. The launch article listed a historical launch price of $5.99 / €5.99 including VAT for a 10-pack; that is not a current price.

What changed on the Prusament spool

Prusa said the redesigned spool is 3 mm slimmer and uses a locking design. Its Knowledge Base warns that old refills do not fit the new spools and recommends pairing new refills with new spools. The stated reason is the dimensional change: extra clearance can increase errors. Check the refill and spool generation before combining parts; the compatibility guidance is in Prusa’s Knowledge Base.

Temperature limits: the tag is not the spool

Prusa lists a limit of up to 80 °C for an OpenPrintTag glued to a spool during drying. Higher figures sometimes associated with the redesigned spool refer to spool materials or high-temperature spools, not the attached tag. Do not assume the tag can tolerate a spool’s maximum drying temperature; use the tag-specific limit stated by Prusa on its product page.

Where to check the format and implementation

The OpenPrintTag specification repository describes itself as containing the specification, documentation, and utility scripts. Together with the project site’s implementation resources, this gives hardware and software developers a basis for building support. It is not a compatibility list or evidence that every implementation behaves identically.
