Prusa Research announced the CORE One at Formnext in Frankfurt on November 19, 2024, introducing a compact, enclosed CoreXY 3D printer as the foundation of a new product line. Its launch announcement described active chamber temperature control up to 55 °C and compatibility with common materials including PLA and PETG. Those are Prusa’s specifications and design claims, not independent comparative test results. Prusa announced a refreshed generation, the CORE One+ (Gen 2), on August 13, 2026.

What Prusa announced in 2024

The CORE One was presented as an alternative to Prusa’s open-frame MK4S, not as a replacement for every use. The machine uses CoreXY motion and a fully enclosed chamber; Prusa said it was more compact externally than the MK4S while offering a larger build volume. The announcement also highlighted offline operation. No independent controlled comparison accompanied those comparative claims.

Prusa said the chamber could be actively controlled up to 55 °C while still supporting materials such as PLA and PETG. CEO Josef Prusa framed that as a deliberate effort to avoid the door-open compromise he said some enclosed-printer makers recommend for those materials. That statement describes Prusa’s design goal; it does not establish how every printer or material behaves in practice.

Josef Prusa also described the CORE One as robust, repairable, and designed for disassembly with a screwdriver, with no glued or welded construction. These are manufacturer statements about the product philosophy, not independent durability findings.

That was the status on the announcement date, not a guarantee of current availability.

CORE One or MK4S: which fits your needs?

There is no universal winner in Prusa’s own framing: the company said the open-frame MK4S and enclosed CORE One could coexist. The practical choice depends on what you print, how much room you need, whether enclosure and active chamber control matter, and whether you already own an MK4S.

Decision factor CORE One / CORE One+ MK4S
Enclosure and chamber Fully enclosed CoreXY design with active chamber temperature control up to 55 °C, according to Prusa’s 2024 launch announcement. Open-frame option in Prusa’s launch comparison; no active enclosed chamber described there.
Common materials Prusa said PLA and PETG remain compatible despite the enclosure. Prusa described the MK4S as suitable for commonly used materials including PLA and PETG.
Size and build volume Prusa said it has a smaller exterior and larger build volume than the MK4S; no independent comparison was provided. Used as the comparison point in Prusa’s launch announcement.
Current ownership Prusa announced an MK4S-to-CORE One conversion kit; verify current kit contents, compatibility, price, and stock. Can remain an open-frame option if it already meets the owner’s material and part-size needs.

For an MK4S owner, compare the current conversion-kit cost and contents with the price and features of a complete CORE One+ before deciding. For a new buyer, consider assembly preference and current price and support along with enclosure and part-size requirements. The supplied product announcements do not establish independent speed, reliability, noise, or print-quality results for either model.

Can an MK4S be converted to a CORE One?

Prusa announced a conversion kit intended to give MK4S owners a path to CORE One rather than requiring purchase of a whole new printer. The announcement does not establish the kit’s current availability, price, exact contents, or compatibility with every configuration. Confirm those details with Prusa before ordering, particularly if you are considering whether the conversion is better value than a complete refreshed printer.

INDX multi-tool system and open design files

INDX multi-tool upgrade

Prusa and Bondtech announced the INDX multi-tool system for CORE One in November 2025, describing capability for up to eight materials. Their announcement described an initial Founders Edition run of 1,000 units and planned shipping for Q1 2026. Those rollout details are historical; they do not confirm present availability or independently tested print results.

CORE One frame CAD files

In December 2025, Prusa announced that CORE One and CORE One L frame CAD files were released under its Open Community License (OCL). The company said makers may inspect, modify, and share derivatives subject to that license. Read the OCL terms before reusing or distributing files; the announcement alone does not make the hardware unrestricted open-source.
