Proton does not run on PS5. It is Valve’s compatibility layer for running many Windows games through SteamOS on devices such as Steam Deck. PS5 backward compatibility is a separate Sony feature for supported PS4 games. The right comparison is therefore not “which console uses Proton,” but how each platform handles its own supported games, what setup is involved, and what performance evidence is available.
Does PS5 use Proton?
No. Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer that enables Windows games to run through SteamOS. Sony’s PS5 backward compatibility, by contrast, lets players access supported PS4 games on PS5; it is not Proton and does not mean the console runs Windows games through Valve’s software.
Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Some games may still show errors or unexpected behavior. Sony also notes that Game Boost can provide a higher or smoother frame rate for selected titles, but that is a PS4-on-PS5 feature—not a comparison with Steam Deck performance. How compatibility works on Steam Deck
Steam Deck runs SteamOS, which Valve describes as Linux-based. Proton helps make many Windows games available through that operating system. Whether a particular game works well is a title-by-title question: Valve’s compatibility review considers the game and its middleware, including whether Proton-related blocking bugs or performance issues affect the experience.

Use a game’s current Steam Store compatibility information as a practical guide, not a permanent guarantee. Valve says the review is ongoing, and ratings can change as games, updates, Proton, or the Deck change. A compatibility label is also not a measured frame rate or a promise that every launcher, update, or online service will behave identically in every session.
What the comparison can—and cannot—say about performance
The official material cited here does not provide controlled, same-game PS5-versus-Steam-Deck benchmarks, so it cannot establish a universal performance winner. The platforms also serve different use contexts: PS5 is a console, while Steam Deck is a handheld PC. That distinction alone does not prove that one will deliver better frame rates or image quality for a particular game.

A meaningful head-to-head result needs the same game and software version, comparable graphics settings and rendering conditions, a stated frame-rate target, and a clear test method. It should also identify the PS5 and Steam Deck models and distinguish modes such as a console’s quality setting from its performance setting. Without that detail, an FPS figure or broad claim that one platform is always faster is not a reliable comparison.
How to force a different Proton compatibility tool for one Steam Deck game
Changing the compatibility tool is an optional troubleshooting step, not a required setup step and not a guarantee that a game will work. Steam Support documents this per-game setting:

- In the Steam Deck Library, highlight the game you want to troubleshoot.
- Open the game’s menu and select Properties.
- Choose Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, then select the tool you want to try.
Valve’s Steam Support instructions describe the setting. If a change does not help, return to the game’s compatibility settings and stop forcing a tool; the game’s current compatibility listing is a better place to check its expected support status.

Valve says an installed Steam Deck game can be played offline unless that particular game requires an internet connection. A portable device does not remove a title’s own online authentication or service requirements. PS5 Remote Play is a different option: it streams gameplay from a PS5 over a network rather than running a Steam game locally through Proton. Sony recommends a high-speed connection and cites 15 Mbps for best performance in its Remote Play guidance. That is a general recommendation, not a guarantee for every network, nor evidence that streamed play is equivalent to local Steam Deck gameplay.
