Un protocolo de red es un conjunto de reglas que permite a dispositivos y aplicaciones intercambiar datos de forma compatible. Internet no depende de un único protocolo: distintas capas cumplen funciones diferentes. IP lleva datagramas entre hosts; TCP o UDP ofrecen servicios de transporte; y protocolos como HTTP permiten que las aplicaciones soliciten y entreguen contenido.

Qué es un protocolo de red

Un protocolo define reglas comunes para comunicarse, incluidos los formatos de los mensajes y cómo deben enviarse, recibirse e interpretarse. Para que dos extremos puedan intercambiar información, deben implementar reglas compatibles. Una computadora, un teléfono o un router ejecuta protocolos; ninguno de esos dispositivos es un protocolo.

Los protocolos se organizan y combinan en capas. Cada capa ofrece servicios a la que está por encima y utiliza los de la que está debajo. Así, una aplicación web puede usar HTTP, que a su vez utiliza un protocolo de transporte, mientras IP se ocupa de llevar datagramas entre hosts. La arquitectura de Internet se describe mediante estas capas; el modelo OSI es otra forma de organizar conceptos, no la única descripción de cómo funciona Internet.

Qué hacen IP, TCP y UDP

IP significa Internet Protocol. Se ocupa de transportar datagramas entre hosts, pero no garantiza que lleguen ni que lo hagan en orden: pueden perderse, duplicarse, reordenarse o llegar dañados. Los protocolos de capas superiores pueden ofrecer propiedades adicionales cuando una aplicación las necesita. RFC 1122, Requirements for Internet Hosts — Communication Layers, describe estas funciones y limitaciones.

Protocolo Servicio principal Fiabilidad y orden Control de flujo
IP Transporta datagramas entre hosts. No garantiza la entrega ni el orden. No ofrece por sí mismo control de flujo extremo a extremo.
TCP Proporciona a las aplicaciones un servicio de transporte orientado a conexión. Ofrece entrega fiable y ordenada. Incluye control de flujo.
UDP Proporciona un servicio de datagramas sin conexión. No incorpora por sí mismo las garantías de fiabilidad y orden de TCP. No incluye el mismo servicio de control de flujo de TCP.

La comparación no significa que TCP sea siempre mejor. Una aplicación puede necesitar entrega ordenada y fiable, o puede preferir otro servicio y gestionar ciertas propiedades por su cuenta. UDP no es fiable por sí solo; mecanismos de capas superiores pueden añadir fiabilidad u otras funciones. RFC 8095 analiza los servicios de transporte y las propiedades que pueden necesitar las aplicaciones.

Cómo funcionan juntos los protocolos al abrir un sitio web

La ruta depende de la configuración del sitio y de las capacidades de cliente y red. Este ejemplo muestra una arquitectura posible, no una secuencia universal.

  1. Encontrar información del servicio: el cliente necesita resolver el nombre del sitio y localizar un endpoint. DNS (Domain Name System) puede proporcionar información de conexión y transporte mediante registros HTTPS o SVCB, definidos en RFC 9460.
  2. Establecer un transporte compatible: una posibilidad es QUIC, un protocolo de transporte sobre el que funciona HTTP/3. En otras configuraciones, HTTP funciona sobre TCP.
  3. Enviar la solicitud y recibir la respuesta: HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) define el intercambio de solicitudes y respuestas de la aplicación. HTTP/3 conserva la semántica de HTTP, pero funciona sobre QUIC; QUIC proporciona, entre otras funciones, multiplexación, control de flujo por flujos y protección criptográfica.
  4. Probar una alternativa si hace falta: si no se puede establecer QUIC por problemas de conectividad, HTTP/3 recomienda probar versiones de HTTP basadas en TCP. RFC 9114 describe HTTP/3 y esta alternativa.

Una analogía sencilla es que IP se ocupa de llevar los paquetes hacia el host de destino, mientras TCP puede ofrecer a la aplicación una transferencia fiable y ordenada. UDP entrega datagramas sin incorporar por sí mismo esas mismas garantías. La analogía es limitada: los protocolos especifican formatos, estados y reglas de comportamiento, no una conversación humana literal.

Por qué existen tantos protocolos y cómo se estandarizan

Las aplicaciones tienen necesidades distintas, por lo que la red ofrece servicios diferentes que pueden combinarse. Un protocolo puede resolver una parte concreta de la comunicación sin tener que definir todas las demás. La evolución de HTTP ilustra esa composición: HTTP/3 conserva el protocolo de aplicación, pero utiliza QUIC en lugar de TCP.

La IETF documenta y revisa especificaciones para el uso de Internet, pero no todos los documentos RFC tienen el mismo estatus. Según RFC 2026, una especificación que llega a ser Internet Standard debe, en general, ser estable y técnicamente competente, contar con implementaciones interoperables y experiencia operativa, y tener utilidad y apoyo. Para comprobar el estado actual de una especificación concreta, consulta su página vigente en el RFC Editor.
