Cyber-physical security protects interconnected digital and physical environments together. As IT systems, IoT devices, cameras, networks, and facilities become more connected, organizations need to know what is linked, control who can reach it, and coordinate monitoring with incident response—not assume that a single security tool can cover every risk.

What is cyber-physical security?

Cyber-physical security is the coordination of digital cybersecurity and physical security to protect people, assets, and operations. It matters because a connected system can cross the boundary between the two: a networked camera or other IoT device is both a physical asset and a point connected to digital infrastructure.

That means a security event may require more than one team to respond. A cyber incident involving a connected device could affect physical operations, while a physical-security event may depend on networked systems for detection or response. The goal is to manage those dependencies as one environment, while preserving the expertise and responsibilities of cyber and physical security teams.

How organizations can prepare

A November 29, 2024 partner-contributed article summarizing a vendor webinar with Allison J. Taylor of Thought Marketing LLC and Cesar Salazar of Claro Enterprise Solutions recommends a practical focus on inventory, access, monitoring, response, suppliers, and governance. Treat these as webinar guidance, not a universal standard or a substitute for sector-specific requirements.

  1. Inventory connected assets

Identify the systems and devices connected to organizational networks or operations, including IT assets, IoT devices, cameras, and relevant supplier-connected components. Record ownership, purpose, connections, and dependencies, then establish a process to keep the inventory current. An incomplete or outdated inventory makes it harder to judge exposure or coordinate a response.

  2. Limit and review access

Determine which people, services, and devices need access to each system, and remove unnecessary permissions. The webinar summary also points to zero-trust controls and micro-segmentation as approaches to consider. Their suitability depends on the organization’s architecture and operating needs; the source does not compare implementations or establish a particular design as best for every environment.

  3. Coordinate monitoring and incident response

Plan how cyber and physical security teams will share relevant alerts and decide who acts when an incident spans both domains. Include connected-device events and automated or AI-enabled surveillance and response in the scenarios the teams review. Define escalation paths, responsibilities, and how operations will continue or be safely interrupted during response.

  4. Assess suppliers and dependencies

Review how vendors and interconnected components access or affect systems, and include those dependencies in security and incident planning. Clarify responsibilities for access, monitoring, notification, and response. Vendor management is particularly important when organizations rely on legacy systems or several suppliers to operate a connected environment.

  5. Build in privacy, governance, and workforce practices

Decide what data connected systems collect, who may use it, and how its use is governed. Surveillance and automated response can raise privacy and ethical concerns as well as security questions. Give staff clear responsibilities and practical procedures so that escalation and response do not depend on informal assumptions.

What makes integration difficult?

  • Legacy-system complexity: Older equipment may be difficult to connect, monitor, or update alongside newer systems.
  • Limited resources: Integration requires people, time, and budget for inventory, monitoring, coordination, and maintenance.
  • Privacy and ethical concerns: Cameras and other connected systems can gather sensitive information, while automated actions may have real-world consequences.
  • Supplier coordination: Multiple vendors and dependencies can complicate access management and incident response.

These constraints are reasons to plan integration carefully, not evidence that every organization needs the same architecture or a particular product. The webinar summary offers recommendations but does not provide neutral vendor comparisons, measured outcomes, or a ranking of security approaches.

How strong is the evidence behind the headline numbers?

The Hacker News’ November 29, 2024 partner-contributed webinar summary attributes a claim of a 30% increase in threat volume from 2023 to 2024 to Check Point Research’s 2024 report, while also describing the number as debatable. The original report was not reviewed here, so the figure should not be treated as independently verified or as a precise measure of cyber-physical risk.

Claro’s service page describes cyber-physical security as the convergence of digital cybersecurity and physical security systems to protect people, assets, and operations. That page also makes a projection about enterprise convergence, but does not identify the underlying study in the available material; the projection is therefore not a sound basis for estimating how many organizations will adopt this approach.

What to evaluate before choosing an approach

When assessing a program, service, or architecture, ask how it will handle the organization’s actual systems and constraints rather than relying on broad claims about integrated or AI-driven security.

  • Can it account for legacy systems and the organization’s connected-asset inventory?
  • Will it improve visibility across cyber and physical signals, and can the relevant teams act on those signals?
  • Are incident responsibilities and escalation paths clear across internal teams and suppliers?
  • How are privacy, ethical data use, and governance handled?
  • Can the approach scale to the organization’s environment, and are staffing and budget sufficient to operate it?

The available source material does not establish a universally superior vendor, architecture, or measured result. For technical design or compliance decisions, consult current authoritative guidance relevant to the organization’s jurisdiction and sector; the overview and webinar recommendations alone do not settle those questions.
