You can back up and restore your save for the Switch 2 release, Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, using Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud. Nintendo lists cloud saves as supported for this specific game, but you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership and the Nintendo Account linked to the user whose save you want to protect. You can back up from the HOME Menu or System Settings; before restoring, compare the local and cloud timestamps so you do not replace newer progress with an older save.
Capcom announced the Switch 2 release for October 9, 2026, and says it bundles the original game with the expansion. The steps below apply to that Switch 2 release; they do not establish that saves can move between Switch 2 and PlayStation, Xbox, or PC. Capcom’s announcement and Nintendo’s game listing identify the edition and its cloud-save support.
What do you need before backing up or restoring?
Have the Switch 2, an internet connection, an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and access to the Nintendo Account associated with the game’s user. Save Data Cloud is tied to the selected user; choosing another user will not reveal or restore the first user’s save. Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud as supported for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen specifically, so do not assume that every Switch or Switch 2 game has the same support. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud guidance explains the membership requirement.
The membership requirement applies to using Save Data Cloud, including backing up and downloading a cloud save. Nintendo’s official membership options provide current pricing. You do not need to buy another copy of the game just to use a cloud backup if the software is already available to the account; on a replacement console, sign in with the same Nintendo Account and make sure the game is available before looking for its save.

If you are setting up a replacement console, make sure you select the user associated with the original save. Moving a game card, redownloading software, or inserting a microSD Express card does not move the save itself. Switch 2 saves are stored in the console’s system memory, not on the game card or microSD Express card. A game card or storage card may provide or hold software data, but it is not a portable save archive.
How do you back up your Dragon’s Dogma 2 save?
Use Save Data Cloud to send the save associated with the selected Switch 2 user to Nintendo’s cloud. You can start from the HOME Menu or open the cloud-save settings directly; after the upload, check the timestamp so you know which progress the cloud copy represents. Close the game before backing up so that you are not trying to preserve progress that is still open in an active session.
Option 1: Back up from the HOME Menu
- Close Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen if it is running, then go to the HOME Menu.
- Highlight the game icon. Do not launch the game.
- Press the + or − button on the controller.
- Select Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the user whose save you want to back up.
- Select Back Up Save Data.
- When the process finishes, return to that game’s cloud-save screen and check the displayed cloud timestamp.
Option 2: Back up through System Settings
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Data Management, then Save Data Cloud.
- Choose the correct user.
- Select Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen from that user’s software list.
- Select Back Up Save Data, then check the cloud timestamp when the upload completes.
The timestamp is your check that the cloud copy reflects the progress you intended to protect. Confirm both the title and the selected user, not just the time: a timestamp for another user’s save does not protect the file you mean to back up. An upload can overwrite the existing cloud copy, and Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. If you see a timestamp that does not match the progress you mean to keep, stop and verify the selected user and the console’s local save before uploading again.

Save Data Cloud is a synchronization and restore feature, not a way to keep a history of multiple earlier save versions. Do not assume that making another backup preserves the older cloud copy as a separate restore point. If you have the console’s current local progress and want that version protected, confirm it is the version being uploaded before choosing Back Up Save Data.
How do you restore a cloud save on Switch 2?
Restore through Save Data Cloud using the same Nintendo Account and user associated with the backup. Nintendo’s restore flow lets you inspect the cloud and local save timestamps; use that comparison before downloading, because the download replaces the console’s local save.
- On the Switch 2, sign in to the Nintendo Account that was used for the backed-up save.
- Open System Settings → Data Management → Save Data Cloud.
- Select the user associated with the save, then choose Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen.
- Inspect both the cloud-save and console-save timestamps. Decide which version contains the progress you want to keep.
- Stop and compare timestamps before selecting Download Save Data. If the cloud timestamp is newer and represents the progress you need, select Download Save Data. If the local timestamp is newer, do not download the older cloud version over it.
- After the download finishes, start the game and check that the expected progress is available.
A download replaces the local copy; an upload replaces the cloud copy. Nintendo warns that overwritten data cannot be recovered. If you have any doubt about which version is current, do not choose either overwrite action until you have checked the timestamps and selected the correct user. A game card or a newly downloaded copy of the game is not a substitute for that check: saves remain in system memory or in the cloud, not on the card.

When setting up a replacement Switch 2, establishing access to the account and game is separate from restoring the save. A transferred or newly inserted game card does not bring the original console’s system-memory save with it. Use the cloud-save screen to identify whether a backup exists for the correct user, then compare its date with the console save shown on the replacement system. If there is no local save on the new console, the cloud timestamp is still worth checking before downloading, to make sure it is the intended user’s backup and reflects the progress you expect.

Does automatic cloud backup protect every new save immediately?
No. Nintendo says automatic Save Data Cloud backup is enabled for compatible software when a player joins Nintendo Switch Online, and enabled backups occur after the software closes or while the console sleeps. That does not mean an in-game save has already uploaded at the instant you make it.
After playing, close the game or let the console sleep, then return to the game’s Save Data Cloud screen and confirm the cloud timestamp. If the timestamp is stale, check that automatic backup is enabled for the intended user and this game. For important progress, use the manual backup steps above and confirm the result rather than relying on an assumed upload.
Automatic backup is a convenience, not a replacement for checking the copy you intend to keep before a console change or restore. If you have just made progress, give the software a chance to close or the console to sleep, then verify that the cloud timestamp changed. If it has not, confirm the internet connection and the automatic-backup setting, or use the manual process while the local save you want is still present.
What should you do if the cloud backup is missing or out of date?
Check the account, membership, connection, and backup settings before deciding that the save is gone. The wrong user or an older cloud timestamp can look like a missing backup, while downloading an old copy may replace newer local progress. Nintendo’s support guidance includes the issue “Save Data Cloud Backup Files Are Missing on Nintendo Switch 2”; the first useful checks are the user and account selected, membership status, and the game’s cloud listing.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- The game is not listed: Confirm that you selected the user who played the game and that the user is linked to the Nintendo Account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s support steps are user-specific. Also make sure you are looking under the Switch 2 edition’s user profile rather than assuming that a game listing under another user applies to this save.
- The cloud timestamp is old: Check the internet connection and whether automatic backup is enabled for that user and game. Close the game or let the console sleep, then check the timestamp again; alternatively, initiate a manual backup if the local save is the version you want to preserve.
- You are on a replacement console: Confirm that you signed in with the same Nintendo Account used for the original backup, then select the matching user in Save Data Cloud. A different account or user does not provide access to another user’s save.
- You are unsure which copy to keep: Compare the timestamps and do not select either upload or download until you identify the newer version you want. A stale cloud copy downloaded over a newer local save would replace it.
- You have no active membership: Save Data Cloud requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo says previous backups can be accessed after resubscribing within 180 days of membership expiration; this is a policy window, not a guarantee that a particular overwritten or missing save can be recovered. See Nintendo’s membership and cloud-save guidance.
Nintendo says deleting downloaded software leaves its save data intact, but deleting the associated user deletes that user’s save data. If you are troubleshooting, do not delete the user in an attempt to refresh the cloud list. Nintendo also says local save-data backups are not supported on Switch 2 or Switch. Nintendo’s Switch 2 data-management FAQ covers where save data is stored and what deletion affects.

If the cloud copy is newer than the console save, downloading may be the right choice, but only after checking that it belongs to the right user and corresponds to the progress you need. If the console copy is newer, uploading may preserve it, but that action overwrites the cloud copy. In either case, compare before committing. There is no supported local microSD or USB copy you can use as a safety net after overwriting both relevant versions.
Is Transfer Your Save Data the same as making a backup?
No. Nintendo’s Transfer Your Save Data feature moves a save from one eligible console to another and deletes the source copy after it is sent. It can help when both consoles are available, and it does not require Nintendo Switch Online, but it is not a second copy to keep as insurance. Check the destination before proceeding because overwriting a destination save cannot be undone. See Nintendo’s transfer instructions.
The choice depends on what you need. Use Save Data Cloud when your goal is to protect a supported game save while keeping the console copy, provided you have an active membership. Use Transfer Your Save Data when moving progress between eligible consoles and you understand that the source file is removed. Neither method should be treated as an archive of multiple historical saves, and both require care around overwrites. The cloud route has a membership requirement; the console-to-console transfer does not. A transfer can be useful if both consoles are available, but it is not equivalent to retaining a backup on the old console.
For protecting a save while retaining the console copy, use Save Data Cloud. A microSD Express card and USB storage are not local save-backup alternatives: Nintendo does not support copying Switch 2 saves to those devices. Nintendo’s support statement is explicit: “Local save data backups are not currently supported on Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch.” Read Nintendo’s save-data support guidance.
What do the game’s own save and load options do?
Capcom says Dragon’s Dogma 2 supports manual saving and autosaving. Its in-game save and load options are part of the game’s own save system; they do not create another Nintendo cloud archive. Capcom’s all-platform FAQ describes the game’s save behavior, but it does not independently verify a separate Switch 2 interface detail. Capcom’s FAQ says the game supports both manual save and autosave.
Capcom’s FAQ also addresses the question “How can I save the game? / I cannot save at certain scenes.” The practical distinction is that the game’s save system and Nintendo’s console-level cloud backup solve different problems: a manual save or autosave records game progress, while Save Data Cloud copies the user’s console save to Nintendo’s cloud. If the game will not save in a particular scene, the cloud backup menu is not a substitute for resolving that in-game restriction.

Capcom also explains that Load from Last Inn Rest refers to the last rest at an inn or dwelling; camping does not count as an inn rest for this option. Capcom’s FAQ specifically addresses players who expect the option to resume from the last time the Arisen camped. That in-game recovery choice is different from restoring a Nintendo cloud save. If you need to protect progress from console loss, check Save Data Cloud rather than treating an in-game load point as a backup.
What are the limits of Switch 2 save recovery?
Save Data Cloud is the supported backup route for this game, but it cannot recover a version that has already been overwritten in both the cloud and on the console. A transfer is a move, not a retained backup, and microSD Express or USB storage cannot supply a local copy of the save. Do not assume that Nintendo’s Switch 2 backup can be converted into a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC save; the available information does not establish cross-platform save migration.
Keep the account and user that own the save intact, confirm the cloud timestamp after a backup, and treat every upload or download as an overwrite decision. If your Nintendo Switch Online membership expires, Nintendo describes a 180-day window for resubscribing to access previous backups. If the relevant save was deleted or replaced, that membership window alone does not recreate it.
One practical way to avoid confusion is to make a manual cloud backup after closing the game, then return to the cloud page and verify the timestamp before you change consoles or download a file. Do not delete the user to troubleshoot a missing entry: that user’s save data is deleted with the user. Deleting downloaded software is different and Nintendo says the save remains. These distinctions matter because the Switch 2 does not offer a supported local-save copy to restore from after a mistake.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Dragon’s Dogma 2 use the same save file on Switch 2 as on other consoles?
The cited Nintendo and Capcom information does not establish that a Switch 2 save is compatible with PlayStation, Xbox, or PC saves. Treat the Switch 2 save as platform-specific unless Capcom provides explicit transfer instructions.
Can I make a second local copy of my Switch 2 save on a computer?
Nintendo does not support local save-data backups on Switch 2, including copying saves to USB storage or a microSD Express card. For this game, use Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud rather than relying on a computer copy.

If I delete the game software, will my Arisen save disappear too?
Nintendo says deleting downloaded software leaves its save data on the console. Deleting the user associated with that save is different and deletes that user’s save data.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to back up or restore this save?
Yes. Nintendo lists Save Data Cloud support for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen, and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the cloud feature. The separate Transfer Your Save Data option does not require membership, but it moves the file and deletes the source copy.
What should I do if the cloud save is older than my console save?
Do not download it over the local save. Check that you selected the right user, then confirm that the local save is the version you want to keep before considering a manual upload; an upload replaces the cloud copy.

No. Capcom says the game supports manual saving and autosaving, but those are in-game save functions. Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud is the separate console-level backup, and you should confirm its timestamp after backing up.
Can Load from Last Inn Rest restore the last time I camped?
Capcom says the last-inn-rest option refers to resting at an inn or dwelling; camping does not count as an inn rest for that option. It is an in-game load choice, not a Nintendo cloud backup.
How long after my membership expires can I access previous cloud backups?
Nintendo describes a 180-day window for resubscribing and accessing previous Save Data Cloud backups. That policy window does not guarantee recovery of a save already overwritten or deleted.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Nintendo supports Save Data Cloud for Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen on Switch 2. Use the correct user and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, then verify the cloud timestamp after backing up. Before restoring, compare local and cloud timestamps carefully: downloading overwrites the local save, uploading overwrites the cloud save, and Nintendo warns overwritten data cannot be recovered. Switch 2 saves cannot be copied to microSD Express or USB as a local backup.
