By defining a boundary between the two, Treble was designed to make Android upgrades less dependent on rebuilding each device’s vendor code. It made updates easier to engineer—not guaranteed to arrive faster or at all.
What Project Treble changed in Android 8
Before Treble, the code that adapted Android to a device’s hardware was more tightly interwoven with the Android framework. Google described that arrangement as making upgrades challenging, costly, and time-consuming for manufacturers. Treble reorganized the low-level system into two sides: the generic Android framework and a vendor implementation containing hardware-specific components.
Google’s Project Treble documentation describes the change as a major architectural update in Android 8.0. Its aim was to let the framework advance while compatible vendor software remained in place, rather than requiring manufacturers to rebuild that hardware-specific software for each framework change.
How the framework and vendor boundary works
The framework side and vendor side are kept in separate partitions and communicate through a defined vendor interface, commonly referred to as VINTF. The interface limits uncontrolled dependencies on private implementation details, so each side can change with less risk of breaking the other.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
AOSP documents several mechanisms involved in expressing or maintaining this boundary, including HIDL, stable AIDL, configuration interfaces, and the Vendor Native Development Kit (VNDK). VNDK was introduced in Android 8.0 to provide APIs between framework and vendor code and manage which libraries could cross partition boundaries. It is part of Treble’s historical implementation: current AOSP documentation says VNDK is deprecated starting with Android 15, reflecting the evolution of Android’s architecture.
VTS checks vendor compatibility
The Vendor Test Suite (VTS) tests whether a vendor implementation complies with the required interface. One way to understand its role is to compare it with the Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS), which checks compatibility on the app/framework side. Treble added a corresponding contract and test mechanism for the framework/vendor boundary.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Does Project Treble make Android updates faster?
Treble reduces coupling: in principle, a manufacturer can update the Android framework without replacing compatible device-specific vendor code. That can simplify part of the engineering work involved in an upgrade.
It does not require a manufacturer or carrier to release an update, set a delivery schedule, or support a device for a particular length of time. Whether an upgrade ships still depends on the organizations responsible for building, approving, and distributing it. Treble is an architectural capability, not an update promise.

Treble’s security rationale
Treble’s modular design also aimed to improve isolation and reduce the privileges available to vendor-provided hardware abstraction layers (HALs). In the earlier arrangement, HALs could run in-process and share that process’s permissions. Isolating vendor components can limit the potential consequences of a fault or compromise, but it does not eliminate vulnerabilities.
Can an Android 8 device run a GSI?
A Generic System Image (GSI) is a generic AOSP system image used to test or run the framework side against a device’s vendor software. AOSP gives an example in its shared system image documentation: an Android 10 GSI can run on Treble-compliant devices running Android 8 or later. That example does not mean every GSI works on every device.

- [360 ° Flexible Rotation Design] Comes with a rotatable lanyard ring that supports 360 ° free rotation, effectively solving the problem of twisted and tangled lanyards
- [Wide compatibility] The ultra-thin 0.02-inch design does not block the charging port at all, and both wired and wireless charging can be used directly without removing the pad. Compatible with most smartphones such as iPhone, compatible with various wristbands, lanyards, crossbody straps, and keychains
- [Durable and Portable Material] Premium rust-resistant stainless steel material with good flexibility, which not only avoids scratching the phone case, but also has excellent anti rust and anti fading performance
- [Multi scenario Practical] Paired with a lanyard or wristband, hands-free use can be achieved. The phone is within reach and not easily dropped, ideal for daily commuting and outdoor activities. Suitable for full coverage phone cases, does not support half coverage phone cases
- [Quality Service] If you find any damage or other issues with the product upon receipt, please contact us immediately. We will handle it quickly
A device’s actual Treble implementation matters. AOSP’s GSI guidance focuses on Android 9 and later and notes that GSI 12 removed workarounds for Android 8.0 and 8.1 devices that were not fully Treblized. As a result, an Android 8 or 8.1 version number alone does not establish GSI compatibility.
GSIs are primarily for developer and compatibility testing. Installing one should not be treated as a manufacturer-supported route to a consumer Android upgrade.

What to check when comparing devices
For a practical comparison, separate the architecture question from the support question:
- Treble implementation: Is the device fully Treble-compliant, rather than merely running an Android version associated with Treble?
- Interface compatibility: Does the vendor implementation meet the interface requirements for the framework or GSI you intend to use?
- Update support: What does the manufacturer’s actual update record and support policy say? Treble alone does not answer this.
- Your goal: Are you looking for ordinary over-the-air updates, or for developer-oriented GSI testing? Those are different use cases.
Google’s Android Security 2017 Year in Review called Treble “One of the most important updates in Android 8.0.” The significance was the architectural separation: Android’s framework and the device-specific vendor implementation gained a defined boundary, with compatibility testing around it.
