Our verdict on YugabyteDB Voyager

YugabyteDB Voyager is an open-source command-line tool for moving supported relational databases to YugabyteDB. It is aimed at teams migrating PostgreSQL workloads, whether they need an offline transfer or a live cutover with continuous change capture. Voyager covers assessment, schema export and transformation, data movement, and verification, and runs through self-hosted deployments on Linux, macOS, Docker, or air-gapped installations.

The published model is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. Before migration, its assessment can check schema compatibility and provide cluster sizing recommendations. Offline migrations handle planned transfers, while live PostgreSQL migration supports continuous change capture plus fall-forward and fall-back workflows. Parallel export and import jobs can improve throughput, progress monitoring shows movement status, and imports can resume after failures. Voyager also accepts CSV or TEXT files from local disk or cloud storage, extending its use to file-based loading scenarios.

Voyager fits organizations comfortable operating a self-hosted CLI and relying on documentation and community support. Its focused design keeps the workflow centered on YugabyteDB, rather than serving as a broad, many-target migration hub. Current documentation also marks offline MySQL and Oracle migrations as deprecated, so teams with those requirements should evaluate alternatives before committing. Choose Voyager when PostgreSQL-to-YugabyteDB migration control, live change capture, and recovery-oriented workflows matter most; choose a broader migration product when you need a wider source or target portfolio or a managed deployment model.
