Our verdict on yGuard

yGuard is a free, open-source Java bytecode obfuscator and code shrinker from yWorks GmbH. It processes compiled Java class files and is designed for developers who need to make Java applications more difficult to reverse engineer while fitting obfuscation into an existing build process. Its supported targets are Java bytecode and stable JDK versions up to Java 21. The desktop tool is delivered as an Ant task and can also integrate with Maven and Gradle.

Its strongest area is configurable build-time processing. yGuard can rename packages, classes, methods, and fields, while dependency analysis removes unreachable code to reduce archive size. XML-based configuration lets teams define code entities for processing. The tool also supports textual resource-file renaming and adjustment, line-number table scrambling and unscrambling, and XML patch generation for deployed obfuscated applications. These capabilities make it suitable for Java projects that need repeatable obfuscation and shrinking alongside compilation and packaging.

The scope is narrower than a full protection suite. yGuard does not provide control-flow obfuscation, string encryption, or anti-tamper protection, so teams seeking those defenses should consider a product with those capabilities. It is a good fit for Java developers who prioritize an open-source tool with Ant, Maven, and Gradle support, configurable XML rules, and archive-size reduction. It is less suitable for organizations that require broader runtime protection or multiple obfuscation layers beyond name transformation, shrinking, resource handling, and line-number processing.
