Workbench review
A free, open-source toolkit for technical Salesforce administration and migration.

Workbench is a browser-based suite for Salesforce administrators and developers who need direct access to Salesforce data, metadata, and APIs. It supports migration, querying, CSV export, record manipulation, API testing, and troubleshooting across Salesforce organizations. The public hosted instance offers web access, while the open-source version supports private installation. Its scope is broader than guided migration: it combines data administration, metadata work, querying, bulk processing, and API diagnostics in one technical toolkit.
The published Free plan includes web-based Salesforce API tools, data and metadata migration, and an open-source BSD license. Migration capabilities cover insert, update, upsert, delete, undelete, and purge operations, with Bulk API asynchronous processing for larger jobs. Smart Lookup helps find related Salesforce records, while field mapping and relationship migration support more involved data transfers. OAuth 2.0 and session-ID login provide two authentication options. Salesforce is the listed integration, and deployment is available through both web and self-hosted environments.
Workbench suits teams that want a free technical utility and are comfortable working directly with Salesforce APIs, SOQL, metadata, and administrative operations. It is less suitable for organizations that need scheduled migration runs, guided onboarding, or a product with an active feature and security update path. The official repository describes the tool as maintenance-only, with no new features and no new security issues fixed. Salesforce also states that Workbench is not an officially supported product and cautions against production use. Choose it for flexible, open-source Salesforce administration and migration work; choose a different migration product when ongoing maintenance, production assurance, or workflow automation is central.
