Our verdict on WiZ
WiZ is a mobile app for controlling WiZ-compatible lights and accessories over Wi-Fi. Available on iOS and Android, it is aimed at households that want lighting schedules, scenes, shortcuts, and remote control without paying for the app. Fixed-time, day-of-week, sunrise, and sunset schedules cover routine changes, while SpaceSense can trigger lighting from motion on compatible devices. WiZ makes sense for homes centered on its lighting range; buyers seeking one app to manage a wider mix of smart-home devices should look elsewhere.
Its strongest fit is lighting automation rather than broad device orchestration. Users can create scenes and shortcuts, automate compatible lights with SpaceSense, and control lights remotely. Amazon Alexa and Google Home voice control are supported, and compatible lights can connect with Matter ecosystems. IFTTT and Apple HomeKit are also listed as integrations. These connections give WiZ routes into other platforms, but the app's verified focus remains WiZ lighting, not a general-purpose hub for a whole home.
The app is free, and the published product description includes its core control and automation features without describing separate app tiers. WiZ supports both cloud access and local-network access for local users; local control should not be confused with full offline operation. The product terms also mention optional paid Heads-Up subscriptions for home-monitoring features, so that offering is distinct from the free lighting app. For a household already choosing WiZ-compatible lights, this is a straightforward control layer. Those prioritizing broader device coverage or complete offline operation should consider an alternative.
