Our verdict on Windows File Recovery

Windows File Recovery is a free Microsoft command-line application for attempting to recover deleted files that are no longer available in the Recycle Bin. It is intended for Windows 10 and Windows 11 users working with internal drives, external drives, USB devices, SD cards, and flash drives. Recovery output must be written to a different destination drive, making it a focused option for file recovery rather than a general disk partition utility.

Its recovery coverage is defined by several modes and filters. Regular mode targets recently deleted files on NTFS, while Extensive mode addresses broader file-system scenarios. Signature-based recovery provides another recovery method. Users can filter searches by file name, path, type, and wildcard, and the application supports NTFS, FAT, and exFAT file systems. Recovery log output can also record the operation. These capabilities make the tool more suitable for targeted recovery work than for browsing or managing partitions.

The main trade-off is scope and interface. Windows File Recovery focuses on recovering files and does not provide partition-editing features, so users looking to resize, create, delete, or otherwise manage partitions should choose a different type of utility. It also does not support cloud storage or network file shares. Choose it when a free Windows command-line tool can address deleted-file recovery across supported local storage sources; avoid it when partition management, a graphical workflow, or network and cloud recovery is central to the task.
