Whimsical is a collaborative visual workspace for individuals, product teams, designers, developers, and organizations. Its infinite-canvas boards support flowcharts, diagrams, wireframes, wireflows, mind maps, sticky notes, and other visual work. Reusable templates cover workshops, planning, diagrams, and brainstorming, while real-time collaboration, guest access, public share links, comments, presentations, voting, and timers support group sessions. It is particularly well suited to diagramming and wireframing teams that want several visual formats in one workspace.

The Free plan provides unlimited boards, unlimited guests, up to 50 board objects per month, and up to 50 doc blocks per month. Pro costs $10 per user per month with annual billing or $12 with monthly billing, adding unlimited board objects, unlimited doc blocks, 90-day version history, and watermark-free exports. Business costs $20 per user per month with annual billing or $24 with monthly billing. It adds private teams, SAML single sign-on, SCIM, additional security controls, and unlimited version history; the monthly plan also includes priority support. The plan structure makes the free tier useful for lighter work, while recurring visual production and larger teams point toward Pro or Business.

Whimsical’s main strength is breadth within visual collaboration: boards can move from a mind map to a flowchart, wireframe, presentation, or workshop activity without changing products. Presentation mode uses sections or frames as slides, and version history supports reviewing earlier work. The web, Windows, macOS, and Linux availability also gives teams several access options. However, teams that need only a basic whiteboard may not need the product’s wider diagramming and planning set, while teams needing unlimited board objects or doc blocks must move beyond Free. Choose Whimsical for connected visual planning and communication; choose a simpler option when those formats are unnecessary.

Whimsical pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Infinite boards combine diagrams, wireframes, mind maps, and workshops.
    • Guests, public links, presentations, voting, and timers support live collaboration.
    • Desktop apps support Windows, macOS, and Linux alongside the web app.
  • Where it doesn't
    • The Free plan limits board objects and doc blocks to 50 per month.
    • Paid plans are priced per editor, which can increase team costs.
    • Advanced security features are reserved for the Business plan.
