Our verdict on Webmin

Webmin is a self-hosted, browser-based administration interface for Linux and other Unix-like systems. It is aimed at administrators who need remote control over server users, services, configuration files, DNS, web servers, mail services, databases, software packages, firewalls, quotas, and backups. Its module-based design also supports delegating access to selected areas, making it suitable for general-purpose server administration rather than only website hosting.

The feature set spans core infrastructure tasks in one interface. Administrators can manage Unix users and groups, DNS zones and records through BIND, Apache virtual web servers, Postfix mail services, and MySQL or PostgreSQL databases. Webmin also handles software package installation and removal, plus filesystem and configuration backup and restore. This breadth makes it a practical fit for Linux-focused environments that need server administration across several services, while its web, Linux, and macOS platform listings support browser-based access across those environments.

Webmin’s main trade-off is its scope. It is a general Unix system administration tool, not a traditional shared-hosting panel, so teams seeking a hosting-specific workflow may prefer an alternative designed around website deployment. The application installer field is false, and package installation should not be confused with one-click web-application deployment. Installation and operation require root access, and the product is intended for people with Linux or Unix administration knowledge. Choose Webmin when free, open-source control and broad server coverage matter most; choose another panel when simplified onboarding or hosting-focused application installation is the priority.
