  • Where it wins

    • Uses the system WebView instead of bundling a browser.
    • Connects Go methods to JavaScript with generated TypeScript models.
    • Builds single-binary production apps with bundled assets.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Stable support is focused on Windows, macOS and Linux.
    • iOS and Android builds are experimental in beta v3.
    • Its desktop-first focus may not suit teams targeting mobile broadly.

Our verdict on Wails

Wails pairs Go application logic with interfaces built in HTML, CSS, JavaScript or frontend frameworks. It is aimed at developers who want desktop applications for Windows, macOS and Linux while working with familiar web UI tools and Go. The framework supplies native windows, menus and dialogs, plus theming, translucency and runtime services. Teams can start from templates for React, Vue, Svelte, Preact, Lit or vanilla JavaScript, and use the CLI for project creation, live development, building and packaging.

Its clearest distinction is how it renders the interface: Wails uses the operating system’s native WebView rather than embedding a browser. Go methods can be called from JavaScript, with generated TypeScript models supporting the boundary between application logic and frontend code. Runtime eventing, logging and dialog APIs add desktop-oriented capabilities, while single-binary production builds bundle application assets. This makes Wails a considered option for Go teams that want a web-based interface without giving up native desktop elements.

Platform scope is the main trade-off. Wails v2 is stable on Windows, macOS and Linux; v3 is beta, and its iOS and Android builds are explicitly experimental. That distinction matters for teams evaluating one framework for both desktop and production mobile apps: Wails is more appropriate when desktop is the priority, not when mature mobile support is central. The project is open source, with community and documentation support. Choose it for Go-powered desktop software with web frontends; consider alternatives if your core requirement is established mobile deployment or broader cross-platform coverage.
