Our verdict on w3af

w3af is an open-source framework for auditing and exploiting web applications. It is aimed at developers and penetration testers conducting web vulnerability assessments and penetration tests, with a particularly strong fit for Linux security engineers who want extensibility and local control. Its architecture separates crawling, auditing, and attacking: crawl plugins discover URLs, forms, and injection points; audit plugins send crafted data to identify vulnerabilities; and attack plugins can exploit findings when that step is appropriate. Console and GTK graphical interfaces provide different ways to operate the scanner.

The open-source pricing model keeps w3af outside a conventional tiered-plan structure. Its published capabilities center on the scanner itself rather than paid feature levels. The strongest functional depth is in combining authenticated testing with API assessment. w3af supports Basic, NTLM, form, cookie, and HTTP-header credentials, while REST API testing can use OpenAPI specifications or captured HTTP requests. Script-based automation can produce text, XML, or HTML output, giving teams options for scheduled or repeatable assessment workflows.

Platform fit is focused and self-hosted. w3af runs on Linux and macOS, offers Docker-based execution, and includes a REST API service with scan, knowledge-base, traffic, URL, and exception endpoints. An official Python REST API client is also available. That makes it suitable for teams comfortable managing local security tooling and extending workflows through scripts or services. It is a weaker choice for organizations that require browser-based scanning, modern browser-driven application coverage, or a managed SaaS experience. Teams should choose w3af for customizable web and API assessment; those priorities may point elsewhere when browser-based coverage is central.
