Our verdict on vMetal

vMetal is the machine provisioning and lifecycle layer of vCluster Platform. It provisions Linux bare-metal servers through PXE boot and virtual machines through KubeVirt, then manages machine claims, node types, capacity pools, operating-system images, networking, assignment, cluster attachment, and deprovisioning. The product is aimed at infrastructure platforms supporting GPU infrastructure, AI clouds, private tenant clusters, Kubernetes worker nodes, standalone control planes, and independently provisioned servers. It is available through web, API, and self-hosted deployment models, with support for both physical and virtual server types.

Its strongest fit is multi-tenant infrastructure that needs provisioning controls beyond initial server deployment. vMetal supports automatic IP allocation and network-data generation, server discovery and inspection, deprovisioning and pool reuse, project-based quotas, access control, and hardware-level tenant isolation through dedicated server assignment. Kubernetes tenant-cluster node attachment and standalone control-plane provisioning extend the workflow from machine allocation into cluster operations. Integrations with Metal3, KubeVirt, NVIDIA NICo, VMware, OpenStack, Terraform/OpenTofu, and Cluster API give platform teams several infrastructure and orchestration paths.

The main purchasing consideration is its dependency on vCluster Platform: an active installation with a license plan that includes vMetal is required. Pricing follows a contact-sales model, so teams evaluating cost need to discuss the applicable platform plan with the vendor. vMetal should suit organizations building multi-tenant Kubernetes or bare-metal clouds that need capacity management, isolation, and lifecycle automation in one layer. Teams seeking a standalone provisioning product outside Kubernetes- and infrastructure-platform workflows should consider a different category fit.
