Our verdict on Vermeil
Vermeil is a free, open-source launcher for Minecraft: Java Edition on Windows and Linux. It is aimed at players who want separate game instances, mod-loader management, modpacks, Java runtimes, skins, and settings in one desktop application. Microsoft OAuth sign-in supports multiple accounts and offline play, while local storage keeps accounts, settings, and game data on the device. The focused audience is players who want more control than a basic launcher provides without paying for the software.
Its strongest area is instance and mod management. Each instance has isolated folders for mods, configurations, and saves, helping keep different setups separate. Vermeil can automatically install Fabric, Quilt, NeoForge, and Forge, and provides in-app browsing for mods, resource packs, shaders, and datapacks. Modpack support covers both Modrinth and CurseForge, including browsing, installation, and imports from .mrpack and CurseForge ZIP archives. Global video and game settings can also apply across instances, while background updates reduce routine maintenance.
Java handling is another practical strength: the launcher detects Java installations, downloads Adoptium runtimes, and allows Java version selection per instance. Its ecosystem connections are centered on Microsoft, Modrinth, CurseForge, and Adoptium, matching the main account, content, and runtime needs of a modded Java setup. The main tradeoff is platform scope, since the published support covers Windows and Linux. Vermeil is also unofficial, and its official homepage presents v1.0.0 while the GitHub README still describes the project as alpha software. Choose it for free, open-source launching with broad modpack and loader coverage; choose an alternative if you need another operating system or prefer an officially maintained launcher.
