Our verdict on Vanadium

Vanadium is GrapheneOS’s open-source Chromium-based browser and WebView implementation for Android devices running GrapheneOS. It serves as the operating system’s default user-facing browser and rendering engine for other apps. The browser is aimed at users who want strong security and privacy controls built into the browsing experience, including strict site isolation, sandboxed iframes, state partitioning, reduced fingerprinting-related information, and third-party cookies disabled by default. It is distributed as part of GrapheneOS and is not currently officially available outside that platform.

Security hardening is Vanadium’s defining strength. JavaScript JIT is disabled by default, with per-site controls available, while hardware memory tagging and type-based control-flow integrity add further mitigations. WebRTC IP handling policy controls, reduced remote services, and built-in filtering through EasyList and EasyPrivacy extend the privacy-focused configuration. These features make Vanadium a focused choice for GrapheneOS users who value browser-level controls without adding separate filtering software. The trade-off is a narrower platform and ecosystem scope than general-purpose browsers.

Vanadium also covers practical browser functions: native Android autofill, credential-manager passkey support, bookmark import and export, and Chromium compatibility. The published project information states that browser extensions are not currently planned, and the browser does not provide sync across devices. That limits customization and continuity for users who depend on extensions or multi-device browsing workflows. Vanadium fits users already on GrapheneOS who want a hardened default browser at no cost; users seeking broad platform support, extension-based workflows, or browser sync should choose an alternative.
