Our verdict on UIKit

UIKit is Apple’s framework for creating and managing graphical, event-driven interfaces in apps. It is suited to developers building native applications for iOS, iPadOS, or tvOS with Swift or Objective-C. Its views and view controllers display content and handle interactions, while the framework also covers input, text, animation, drawing, accessibility, localization, search, and app extensions. UIKit is a framework rather than a standalone commercial app-development platform, so it fits teams working within Apple’s development environment more than those seeking a general-purpose builder.

The framework’s scope is focused on interface work. Its window and view architecture handles app screens, and event handling supports multitouch and other input. Additional capabilities include printing, document-related work, text display, and interface localization. UIKit can be used alongside SwiftUI, giving developers an integration point with Apple’s newer declarative UI framework. Xcode is the supported IDE for starting UIKit projects. This combination makes UIKit relevant when an app’s interface needs UIKit views and view controllers, or when a project connects UIKit components with SwiftUI.

UIKit is free and uses a native development approach, but it is limited to Apple platforms rather than serving cross-platform targets. It also does not provide backend services, so projects needing those capabilities must account for them separately. Choose UIKit for native Apple app interfaces, especially when the project uses Swift or Objective-C and Xcode. It is a poor fit if the priority is one framework for apps across non-Apple platforms or a bundled backend. The choice is therefore clearest for teams committed to Apple’s app ecosystem and its native interface model.
