Our verdict on TypeSpec
TypeSpec is an open-source language and toolset for defining API shapes, data models, operations, routes, parameters, and responses. It is aimed at API developers and teams that want one source definition to produce multiple outputs, including specifications, schemas, documentation, client code, and server code. The project supports web, Windows, macOS, and Linux through its CLI, online playground, and editor extensions for Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio. Its protocol-agnostic modeling approach makes it a fit for teams working across OpenAPI, JSON Schema, and Protobuf.
The main strength is output breadth. TypeSpec generates OpenAPI 3.0 specifications, JSON Schema 2020-12, and Protobuf, while also supporting API documentation and other assets. It can generate client and server code, validate request contents in generated HTTP servers, and produce mock server implementations and runnable projects. Emitters, decorators, and libraries allow the language to be extended. Integration with OpenAPI, JSON Schema, Protobuf, Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, and Node.js helps it fit development workflows built around those technologies.
TypeSpec is less suitable when AsyncAPI is required, because AsyncAPI support is not part of the project’s stated scope. The HTTP server and mock-project emitter documentation identifies those capabilities as experimental, so teams should evaluate whether that status fits their delivery and validation needs. It is also a less obvious choice for buyers seeking a packaged commercial plan centered on verified team collaboration. Choose TypeSpec when protocol-agnostic modeling and multiple generated outputs matter most; consider an alternative when asynchronous API specifications or more established collaboration and mock-server workflows are central requirements.
