Tyk Gateway is an open-source API gateway for teams that need to expose, secure, route, and govern APIs. It is suited to startups, API teams, regulated organizations, and enterprises serving internal users, partners, or external consumers. The gateway supports REST, SOAP, GraphQL, gRPC, TCP, HTTP/HTTPS, WebSockets, and Server-Sent Events. Its core feature set covers traffic routing and proxying, authentication and authorization, rate limiting, quotas, request and response transformation, API versioning, analytics, traffic logging, load balancing, OpenAPI support, and custom middleware or plugins.

Deployment flexibility is a central strength. Tyk Gateway can run in cloud, hybrid, or self-managed environments, making it relevant for organizations with different infrastructure and control requirements. Authentication options include API keys, bearer tokens, JWT, OIDC, Basic Auth, client certificates, mTLS, and custom plugins. Teams also get a developer portal, while the product's open-source model provides room for customization. The free plan lowers the barrier to evaluation, although the separate free trial lasts 48 hours and does not require a card.

The plan structure separates general gateway use from scale and enterprise governance. Core includes cloud, hybrid, or self-managed deployment, unlimited API gateways, a developer portal, and an enhanced success plan. Professional adds unlimited APIs and unlimited API requests per month. Enterprise adds advanced governance and security, premium support with custom SLAs, multi-region deployments, multi-cloud architecture, a named CSM, and a guided PoC. Choose Tyk Gateway when open-source flexibility, protocol breadth, and deployment choice matter. Consider an alternative if you need a longer evaluation period or a simpler gateway with fewer deployment and governance decisions.
