Our verdict on TUIOS
TUIOS is an open-source terminal multiplexer and window manager for developers who organize work across several terminal sessions. It runs inside an existing terminal and combines multiple panes, independent workspaces, modal Vim-like controls, mouse and keyboard support, and several tiling approaches. Its nine workspaces support quick switching, while BSP, scrolling, and master-stack layouts give users different ways to arrange active tasks. The MIT License and free availability make it a fit for users seeking a source-available terminal workflow without a paid tier.
Persistence is a central strength. TUIOS uses daemon-backed sessions that can be detached and reattached, and it supports session resurrection after a daemon restart or reboot. Saved layout templates can preserve working directories and startup commands, helping repeatable projects return in a defined arrangement. Vim-style scrollback, search, selection, and copy mode add depth for users who spend substantial time reviewing terminal output. Kitty and Sixel graphics protocol passthrough, along with Kitty keyboard protocol support, extend compatibility with terminal environments that use those protocols.
Automation and remote access broaden the product beyond pane management. Tape supports scripting, recording, and headless execution, while SSH server mode and browser-based web terminal mode provide additional ways to reach sessions. The web terminal is delivered through a separate web binary, and local persistence keeps the main session model tied to its running environment. TUIOS should suit developers who want persistent, highly configurable terminal workspaces on macOS or Linux, especially those comfortable with Vim-style controls and terminal tooling. Users seeking a hosted service or a broadly distributed desktop application should look elsewhere.
