Our verdict on Tsung
Tsung is an open-source, Erlang-based tool for load testing and benchmarking client/server applications. It is aimed at engineers who need to assess scalability, throughput, response times and server behavior in self-managed environments. Workloads can run across one or more client machines, while supported protocols include HTTP, WebDAV, SOAP, PostgreSQL, MySQL, LDAP, MQTT, AMQP, Jabber/XMPP and other network protocols. Tsung supports Linux, Windows and macOS, with deployment categorized as on-premise.
Its main strength is breadth within distributed protocol testing. Scenarios are configured in XML, and HTTP, WebDAV and PostgreSQL sessions can be recorded through proxy features. Test flows can extract and reinject dynamic data, while configurable user-arrival phases and workload progression help shape the load over time. This makes Tsung a fit for teams testing more than a single web endpoint, particularly when databases, messaging systems or directory services are part of the application environment.
The monitoring and reporting features support a clear performance-investigation workflow: Tsung can monitor CPU, memory and network activity on target servers and produce performance, error and request-statistics reports. Its open-source model suits organizations that prefer to manage execution and infrastructure directly rather than adopt a hosted testing service. Teams should choose Tsung when protocol coverage, distributed load generation and workload control matter most. It is less suitable for buyers seeking a visual, low-configuration experience, a paid support tier, or AI-assisted testing features.
