Our verdict on Trove
Trove is a family photo storage and sharing service for parents who want to collect children’s photos and automatically send relatives a curated weekly newsletter. Its free software stores photos privately at original resolution, supports unlimited contributors and recipients, and works across web, iOS, and Android. Relatives can view, react, and comment through shared links without installing the app, making it suited to families spread across different devices.
The free plan is the center of Trove’s offering. It includes unlimited photo uploads and storage, original-resolution storage, weekly family newsletters, natural-language photo search, and unlimited people who can add photos. The paid options are physical products rather than paid software tiers: Paper Edition costs $4.99 per month and includes one mailing address, while photo books cost $29.99 for an 8.3-inch softcover, $39.99 for an 8.3-inch hardcover, or $54.99 for an 11.7-inch hardcover. The listed books contain 20 pages, with paper specifications varying by format.
Trove’s standout feature is its family communication layer. On-device face recognition and child tagging help organize memories, while this-time-last-year memories, share links, reactions, and comments add ways for relatives to follow along. Video uploads are supported but have monthly fair-use limits, so households prioritizing unrestricted video backup may prefer a service built more broadly around video storage. Trove is a strong fit for families seeking a free, photo-first archive with automatic updates and optional printed keepsakes; it is less suitable for users who need a general-purpose media library or a fully digital product without print-related costs.
