Our verdict on TreeLens
TreeLens is a free, open-source Windows desktop utility for examining local storage usage. It scans folders and drives through parallel directory traversal, then presents the results in a squarified treemap that supports drill-down to individual files. File-type breakdowns show sizes and counts by extension, while search and live filtering help narrow large scan results. Portable executable and installer distributions make it suitable for Windows users who want an analysis tool without a paid tier or server component.
Its strongest area is the combination of visual analysis and follow-up investigation. File-type coloring provides a quick view of what occupies space, while the duplicate finder uses hash-based matching to identify repeated files. Current subtrees can be exported to CSV or JSON, and portable scan snapshots can be saved and reopened. These features give users several ways to inspect, compare, and share results beyond the initial treemap. The NTFS MFT fast path can also accelerate eligible elevated whole-volume scans, although it is tied to specific scan conditions.
TreeLens is a clear fit for Windows users who value open-source software, portability, and detailed local disk analysis. It is especially useful when treemaps, extension-level breakdowns, duplicate detection, or structured exports matter more than a minimal folder-size view. Users on macOS or Linux should choose an alternative because the product is Windows-only. It is also less suited to teams seeking a server-based, cloud, or cross-platform storage-analysis system, since the product is described as a local Windows utility with no server component.
