Our verdict on TP-Link Tapo
TP-Link Tapo is a mobile app for setting up, monitoring and automating compatible Tapo cameras, plugs, lighting, sensors and other smart-home devices. It is a fit for Tapo owners who want remote control, schedules, countdown timers, away mode, device sharing and rule-based Smart Actions in one app. Voice control works through Google Home and Amazon Echo, and the app is available for iOS and Android. Supported Tapo plugs can also report energy usage. Camera live view, detection, notifications and recording are part of the app; cloud video storage and AI camera features are optional additions through Tapo Care.
The core device-control and automation functions are available on a free plan. According to the US Tapo Care pricing, Cloud costs $3.49 per device per month or $34.99 per device per year, with 30 days of cloud storage, up to 2K playback, snapshot notifications and smart filters. Cloud Advanced costs $11.99 monthly or $119.99 annually, adding 180 days of storage, up to 4K playback, 24/7 video storage and AI features. Cloud Advanced AI costs $19.99 monthly or $199.99 annually and includes AI chat, facial recognition, intelligent notifications and summaries. A 30-day trial is listed, and a card is required; prices and trial eligibility can vary by region and account.
Its ecosystem fit is broadest for households already using Tapo: listed integrations include Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home and Samsung SmartThings. The Tapo H500 hub provides Matter controller and bridge functions, connecting selected Tapo devices and Matter-certified products to the Tapo ecosystem. That makes Tapo a practical choice when camera cloud features are the priority alongside everyday device automation. It is less suitable for someone seeking cloud camera storage without a subscription, or Matter functions without the H500; the basic app still covers device control and automation without those paid cloud additions.
