Our verdict on TopoGun

TopoGun is a standalone desktop application for retopology, high-resolution mesh processing, and texture-map baking. It is aimed at artists and teams working with scanned meshes or digital sculptures who need to create lower-resolution topology, refine edge flow, and transfer high-resolution detail. The application supports Windows and macOS and is designed more for production mesh preparation than for primary sculpting.

Its licensing is split between two perpetual options. The Standalone License is intended for freelancers, hobbyists, and small teams, can be active on one computer at a time, and includes lifetime email support. The Floating License is designed for studios, companies, and educational institutions, with License Server administration and multiple instances up to the number of seats. Both plans are perpetual licenses. TopoGun does not offer a free plan or trial, so it fits buyers ready to select a paid license rather than those evaluating through a free tier.

The strongest part of the toolset is its retopology and baking workflow. Automatic retopology is paired with manual topology creation and editing, Guide Lines for planning edge flow, mesh extraction and remeshing, subdivision surface reconstruction, and a Morpher for updating retopologized meshes. One-pass baking covers normal, displacement, ambient occlusion, color, curvature, transmission, and cavity maps. Choose TopoGun when retopology and map transfer are central requirements. Choose a broader sculpting package instead if primary digital sculpting is the main task.
