Our verdict on Threat Composer
Threat Composer is an open-source threat-modeling ecosystem from AWS for security practitioners, developers, and builder teams. It supports application documentation across architecture, data flows, assumptions, threats, and mitigations. The browser-based application can store models locally, while workspaces organize multiple threat models. Teams that prefer structured threat statements and version-controlled model files will find its workflow particularly relevant.
Its ecosystem fit is a notable strength. Threat Composer is available as a hosted web application and can also be self-hosted, with platforms spanning Windows, macOS, Linux, a Chrome extension, and a VS Code editor. The VS Code editor works offline with local files. Integrations include AWS Bedrock, AWS Toolkit for Visual Studio Code, Git, Kiro, Cline, and Claude Desktop. Models can be exported as JSON, Markdown, DOCX, or PDF, supporting both version control and broader review workflows. The AI CLI and MCP server can generate starter models from codebases, although AI CLI usage may incur AWS Bedrock inference costs.
The product’s main focus is structured documentation and model quality rather than deep risk investigation. It includes threat and mitigation linking, assumption tracking, an insights dashboard with quality metrics, threat and mitigation packs, collaborative review, templates and frameworks, and risk prioritization. However, verified risk prioritization and attack-path analysis are limited compared with higher-ranked alternatives. Threat Composer is a strong fit for free teams that want an open-source workflow, multiple deployment options, and consistent threat statements. Teams requiring more advanced attack-path analysis or deeper verified prioritization should consider a broader threat-modeling platform.
