Our verdict on Theia IDE
Theia IDE is an open-source development environment built on the Eclipse Theia Platform. It is designed for developers and organizations that need a customizable IDE available as a desktop application or in a browser. Local and remote backend architectures support different development setups, while Windows, macOS and Linux coverage gives teams a choice of desktop environment. Theia is especially relevant to groups building or adopting development tools rather than seeking a narrowly focused Go IDE.
Its platform and ecosystem fit are central strengths. Theia supports VS Code extensions through the Open VSX Registry, language support through the Language Server Protocol, and Theia, VS Code and headless extension mechanisms. Developers can arrange workbench views, themes and toolbars to suit their workflow, with terminals and debugging integrations also available. Remote development works through remote backends, although Microsoft's proprietary Remote Development extensions are not available. AI chat, agents and model integrations add another option for teams that have access to an LLM.
Theia is distributed as open-source software under EPL-2.0 or GPL-2.0 with Classpath Exception, and its free model suits teams that want to adopt, customize or extend the IDE without a paid-tier structure. AI features are disabled by default, so teams must account for model access separately. The online version offers a quick way to explore the environment, but each session lasts 30 minutes, and Docker deployment for online hosting remains experimental.
