Our verdict on Temporal
Temporal is an open-source platform for building and running durable workflows. Developers define workflows and activities in code through supported SDKs, while the platform persists execution state, records event history, handles failures, and resumes work after interruptions. It is suited to long-running processes, scheduled work, human-in-the-loop approvals, and applications where execution continuity matters. Teams can self-host the Temporal Service or use Temporal Cloud as a managed deployment.
Pricing is usage-based rather than centered on user seats. The Pay-As-You-Go plan has no base monthly fee and starts at $50 per million actions, with active and retained storage charged separately; developer support is available for 10% of usage. Volume Discounts provide self-service pricing down to $25 per million actions, with larger discounts available through a commitment. Business costs $500 per month and adds advanced technical support, a two-hour P0 SLA during business hours, and progressive discounts or commitments. Enterprise and Mission Critical add stronger response commitments, private Slack, and, at the highest tier, optimization, code reviews, and a dedicated platform architect.
The main trade-off is its code-first approach. Temporal offers replay, automatic activity retries with policies and backoff, execution visibility, event-history inspection, child workflows, and cross-team composition, giving engineering teams control over complex orchestration behavior. Signals, queries, updates, timers, and schedules extend workflows beyond simple task sequencing. Those strengths make it a strong fit for developers building critical, stateful processes; teams that prioritize visual workflow design or a simpler non-code experience should choose another type of orchestration tool.
