Our verdict on Teller

Teller is an open-source command-line secrets manager for developers working across development, testing, and production environments. It loads selected values from configured providers into application environments, runs subprocesses with secrets supplied as environment variables, populates local shells, and exports values as YAML or JSON. Its self-hosted distribution is available across Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it suited to local workflows that need a command-line layer over existing secret stores.

Provider and platform coverage is a central part of Teller’s role. It integrates with HashiCorp Vault, AWS Secrets Manager, Google Secret Manager, HashiCorp Consul, AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store, and dotenv. Helm and Kubernetes integrations extend the workflow into deployment configuration, while the official Helm plugin can inject configuration and secrets into charts and mask values during deployment. Teller also supports provider-to-provider copying or synchronization, Tera templates, and write or delete operations where supported. These capabilities make it a practical fit when environments already rely on external vaults or cloud services.

Its strongest focus is operational handling rather than centralized vault administration. Teller can display masked values, redact secrets from process output, logs, and files, and scan code and binary files as well as run scanning as a CI linter. However, it is not a full vault and does not provide verified secret rotation or audit logging. Choose Teller when local injection, scanning, redaction, and Kubernetes-related workflows are the priority. Choose a broader vault-focused product when rotation and audit capabilities are required as core controls.
