Our verdict on TagSpaces
TagSpaces is an open-source file manager and organizer for individuals and teams managing local files without a mandatory cloud account or proprietary database. Its core approach uses filename tags or sidecar files to organize folders and files, with search across names, tags, content, types, sizes, and dates. It also previews images, PDFs, audio, video, spreadsheets, source code, and ZIP archives, while supporting notes in Markdown, HTML, plain-text, and JSON formats. The product is available across web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and Chrome extension environments.
The free TagSpaces Lite editions cover file and folder tagging, management, previews, readable-text notes, tagged-file search, and S3-compatible object storage access. The published paid options include TagSpaces Pro subscription and perpetual-license editions. Pro adds collaborative tag use, local AI tag and description generation, advanced full-text search, and Kanban, map, and calendar views, along with custom folder icons, colors, and backgrounds. The perpetual option includes future updates and one year of support. TagSpaces Custom adds on-premises web or tailored desktop deployments, multi-factor authentication, white-label packages, custom extensions, and priority technical support. Lite Web and Pro Web support self-hosting, Docker deployment or web application use, mobile PWA access, S3-compatible storage, and volume pricing for Pro Web.
Platform and storage flexibility are central strengths. TagSpaces connects with AWS S3, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, MinIO, Dropbox, Google Drive, Nextcloud, and Syncthing, and supports gallery, map, Kanban, FolderViz, and calendar perspectives. Local AI chats can run through Ollama, and the desktop application has a portable mode. This breadth suits users who think in tags, saved perspectives, previews, and connected storage locations. It is less suitable for workflows centered on dual-pane navigation or batch renaming, or for users who prefer a conventional file manager focused on core file operations rather than multiple organizational views.
