Sylos is a free, open-source tool for moving files between cloud storage and drives, designed for deliberate migration runs rather than unattended transfers. Solo users and small teams can review a proposed file-tree change, filter items, and then execute a copy. Self-hosted deployment may suit teams that want to run the tool themselves, while its early-development status makes it a less suitable choice for migrations that depend on stable features and APIs.

The review-and-control workflow is its clearest strength. Users can compare source and destination trees before copying, search and sort items in a list, and filter by file type, folder depth, or regular-expression patterns. During discovery and copying, progress and status views help track a run. If a migration is interrupted, users can pause and resume it without a full rescan; failed items can be marked for retry, and pending items can be excluded. Queryable migration history and SQL snapshots provide records of prior work. These controls make Sylos a fit when operators want to inspect and manage a copy, rather than schedule it: migration scheduling is not supported.

The main buying constraint is ecosystem clarity. Sylos describes moving files between cloud storage and drives, but does not identify supported storage connectors, so buyers should verify that their source and destination are compatible before relying on it. It also does not name support beyond a community channel, and the official site says features and APIs may change quickly. A TUI and SDK functionality are planned, not presented as available features. Sylos is most appropriate for small teams comfortable evaluating an early-stage, self-hosted tool; teams requiring named connectors, scheduled runs, or established interfaces should consider alternatives.

Sylos pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Preview source and destination file-tree differences before copying
    • Filter by file type, folder depth, or regular-expression patterns
    • Pause and resume runs, with history and failed-item retry handling
  • Where it doesn't
    • No migration scheduling
    • Supported storage connectors are not identified
    • Early development means features and APIs may change quickly
