Our verdict on Substack

Substack combines email newsletters with web publishing, subscriber management, audience discovery, analytics, community features, and paid subscriptions. It is designed for writers, podcasters, video creators, and media organizations that want to publish directly to an audience and monetize memberships. Posts can be delivered by email, while publications can also include articles, podcasts, video, live streams, and pages. Native iOS and Android applications extend publishing and reading beyond the web.

The pricing model is straightforward: publishing has no upfront cost or subscriber limit. Substack charges fees when creators earn from paid subscriptions, and payment processors charge separate fees. Creators set their own publication subscription prices, while the software itself does not use conventional email-marketing tiers. The product supports paid subscriptions, free trials, coupons, gifts, and group billing, giving creators several ways to structure access and revenue. Welcome emails, automated drip campaigns, scheduled posts, drafts with autosave, and subscriber filters add useful lifecycle and audience-management tools.

Substack is strongest when publishing and monetization matter more than a broad marketing stack. Analytics cover email, subscribers, traffic, retention, and revenue, and integrations include Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, Twitter/X, Parse.ly, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Custom domains, a visual website editor, and custom email CSS support a more distinct publication presence. However, it lacks verified A/B testing and offers a smaller integration set than full marketing suites. Choose Substack for a creator-led publication with memberships at its center; choose an alternative when advanced campaign experimentation or a wider marketing ecosystem is the priority.
