Our verdict on StackStorm

StackStorm is an open-source automation platform for teams that need to connect services, tools, and infrastructure through event-driven workflows. Sensors and triggers receive inbound or outbound events, rules evaluate event criteria, and actions or multi-step workflows execute the response. Its stated use cases include operational troubleshooting, automated remediation, continuous deployment, ChatOps, and security response. Deployment is self-hosted on supported 64-bit x86_64 Linux environments, including Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 and RHEL/Rocky Linux 8.x/9.x.

Its strongest fit is an operations ecosystem that needs integrations and reusable automation components. StackStorm supports OpenStack, Docker, Puppet, Sensu, JIRA, AWS, and GitHub, while reusable packs can contain integrations, actions, rules, sensors, and workflows. Actions may use scripts or plugins written in arbitrary programming languages. Orquesta and ActionChain provide workflow execution, and the web UI, REST API, and CLI offer several ways to control executions and inspect workflow tasks. Audit trails capture action executions, trigger context, and results, giving teams visibility into automated responses.

StackStorm is free and open source, which suits organizations that want control over deployment and customization rather than a hosted automation service. The trade-off is that teams must operate the platform themselves within its supported Linux environments. Its scope is also deliberately focused: it addresses event-driven remediation and workflow automation, not patching, configuration management, or endpoint management. Choose StackStorm when event sensors, rules, reusable packs, and scriptable workflows are central requirements. Consider a different category of tool when endpoint administration or broader infrastructure lifecycle management is the priority.
