Our verdict on SQL Server Integration Services

SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) is Microsoft’s platform for building enterprise data integration and transformation solutions. It extracts data from XML files, flat files, and relational databases, applies graphical data-flow components or code, and loads the results into destinations. The product is aimed at organizations running Windows and SQL Server-centric ETL workflows, including teams that need package management, incremental loading, and extensibility through Visual Basic, C#, or .NET-based programming.

Pricing follows SQL Server licensing rather than a standalone SSIS tier, and the published plans show several deployment and licensing paths. Enterprise costs 15,123 USD as a one-time annual price and includes a 2 core pack, volume licensing, and hosting. Standard - per core costs 3,945 USD as a one-time annual price with a 2 core pack, volume licensing, and hosting. Standard - server costs 989 USD as a one-time annual price, while Standard - CAL costs 230 USD as a one-time annual price. Developer offers a free download with per-user licensing, and Express offers a free download. Azure Arc Standard per core is 73 USD per core per month, while Azure Arc Enterprise per core is 274 USD per core per month, both with pay-as-you-go billing.

SSIS fits environments that benefit from graphical control-flow and package design alongside custom tasks, data-flow components, script tasks, and script components. Its SSIS Catalog stores, runs, and manages packages, while connection managers cover SQL Server, Excel, FTP, HTTP, Analysis Services, OLE DB, ODBC, ADO.NET, SMTP, WMI, SQL Server Compact, XML, and flat files. It can run locally with SQL Server or through Azure Data Factory’s SSIS Integration Runtime. Choose SSIS when Microsoft-oriented connectivity, CDC, and self-hosted control are priorities; teams seeking a fully managed, standalone ETL service should consider a different fit.
