Our verdict on Spring WebSocket

Spring WebSocket is a module in the open-source Spring Framework for building client- and server-side applications that handle WebSocket messages. It suits Java teams that want to add real-time messaging to Spring applications, especially when they need STOMP alongside direct WebSocket handling. The module is self-hosted and deployed as a library, rather than as a separately hosted service; its client coverage is Java-focused.

Messaging options are a key strength. Teams can configure STOMP over WebSocket endpoints, route messages to annotated controller methods, and use an in-memory broker for subscriptions and broadcasting. For deployments that need an external broker, Spring WebSocket supports relaying to RabbitMQ or ActiveMQ. It also includes STOMP-over-WebSocket and STOMP-over-TCP clients. This makes it a fit for Java systems that need pub/sub and broker choices, while teams seeking language-neutral client SDK coverage or a managed service should consider alternatives.

The module also offers direct WebSocketHandler APIs, Java and XML endpoint configuration, customizable HTTP handshake interceptors and handlers, and SockJS as an HTTP-based transport fallback. These capabilities give Spring teams control over connection handling and fallback behavior within the framework. The trade-off is that adoption belongs in a Spring application and entails operating the deployment yourself. Support is listed through documentation, so teams that require a hosted product or other support channels may prefer a different tool. For Java teams already choosing a library-based approach, its combination of WebSocket, STOMP, and broker relay options is the central reason to consider it.
