Our verdict on Spiderpool

Spiderpool is an open-source Kubernetes networking solution for underlay, overlay, and RDMA environments. It is designed for teams managing complex IP address allocation and connectivity across bare-metal servers, virtual machines, and public clouds, with support for AMD64 and ARM64. Its CRD-based IPAM covers IPv4, IPv6, and dual-stack deployments, while IP pools can be static, shared, exclusive, or affinity-based. The product fits storage, middleware, observability, AI, and latency-sensitive workloads that need more than a single network interface per Pod.

Its main strength is ecosystem coordination. Spiderpool supports multiple underlay and overlay interfaces per Pod and integrates with Multus, Macvlan, IPvlan, SR-IOV, OVS, Calico, Cilium, and Weave networking scenarios. CNI coordination covers routing, ClusterIP access, IP conflict detection, and gateway checks. RDMA support includes InfiniBand and RoCE workloads, while KubeVirt extends its relevance to virtual-machine environments. This breadth makes Spiderpool suitable where several networking models must coexist, but it also means deployment decisions depend on the chosen CNI combination and cluster design.

For distributed environments, Submariner provides multi-cluster connectivity, including an IPSec tunnel for encryption in transit, and EgressGateway integration supports controlled outbound traffic. Network policies are supported through IPvlan with Cilium chaining, while policy maturity varies by CNI.
