Our verdict on SOW

SOW is Pigsty’s self-contained package repository manager for teams creating and maintaining internal or curated RPM/YUM and DEB/APT repositories. Plain mode turns package files in a directory into static repository metadata, while Managed workspaces add package membership, policy, signing, immutable generations, audit history, and publication targets. It runs as a single binary without a repository daemon or database service, and is designed for Linux and macOS environments. The Apache-2.0 distribution and open-source model make it a fit for teams that want to operate their own package repository rather than adopt a hosted service.

The product’s strongest capability is its focused repository workflow. It can build flat RPM/YUM repositories and flat DEB/APT repositories from package files, then preserve immutable repository generations and snapshots. Repository signing, audit history, and operation logs add control around publishing and review, while incremental publication limits updates to changed objects. Managed workspaces provide package membership and policy beyond the simpler Plain mode. Local filesystem and Cloudflare R2 targets give teams a choice between local publication and object-storage delivery, with R2 as the documented external integration.

SOW is most suitable when the requirement is a signed, curated feed in one of two Linux package formats. Its narrow scope is also its main boundary: the documented workflow covers RPM/YUM and DEB/APT repositories rather than container artifacts, and it does not provide upstream proxying or documented access-control features. Teams needing those capabilities should consider a broader repository platform. Choose SOW for a compact, self-contained manager with snapshots, signing, audit history, and incremental publication; choose an alternative when repository breadth or upstream and access-management functions matter more than this focused design.
