Our verdict on Sonic Secondary DNS Service

Sonic Secondary DNS Service is designed for organizations that manage their own primary DNS server and want a separate authoritative service for redundancy. It supports hidden-master configurations, so the customer’s master can remain undisclosed while zone updates are transferred to Sonic. The service is a focused fit for domains that need authoritative DNS continuity without moving primary zone management away from the customer’s infrastructure.

Its strongest feature is the secondary DNS architecture. Sonic provides geographically diverse and redundant authoritative nameservers, accepts zone transfers from the customer-managed master, and supports DNS NOTIFY for update signaling. The service can continue answering DNS requests when the customer’s master server is unavailable. Transfer connectivity is supported over both TCP and UDP port 53, and the service lists three Sonic authoritative nameservers. Together, these capabilities address geographic redundancy, hidden-master operation, and continuity during a primary server outage.

The Custom plan is the listed option, with geographically diverse and redundant authoritative nameservers, hidden-master configuration, and zone transfers and DNS notifications from the customer’s master server. Operational responsibility remains split: customers must configure their own DNS server to permit transfers and notifications from Sonic, and support contact is required to use the service. Choose Sonic when your team already operates a primary DNS server and needs secondary authoritative coverage. An alternative may be more suitable if you want managed primary DNS, self-service provisioning, or a broader platform with automation and additional DNS controls.
