Our verdict on Sockudo
Sockudo is an open-source realtime server written in Rust for teams that want to run WebSocket and HTTP publish workloads in their own environment. Its Pusher-compatible APIs make it relevant to developers looking for a self-hosted alternative that fits a Pusher-oriented application, while its additional protocol and infrastructure features target teams that need more than transient pub/sub. The published feature set includes client and server SDKs for multiple languages, along with a dashboard for operating the server.
The standout distinction is its combination of history and recovery with horizontal fanout. Protocol V2 includes recovery, serials, message IDs, rewind, filtering, annotations and mutable messages; durable channel history supports replay. Fanout adapters connect to systems including Redis, Redis Cluster, NATS, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Google Pub/Sub and Pulsar, alongside databases and AWS messaging services. That breadth can suit teams integrating realtime delivery into an existing backend ecosystem. Sockudo also lists push notifications for FCM, APNs, Web Push, HMS and WNS, as well as Prometheus metrics, webhooks and rate limiting. Teams that only need basic WebSocket messaging may find this scope unnecessary.
Deployment and ownership are central to the choice. Docker Compose and Kubernetes/Helm assets support self-hosting, but operating the service and its connected infrastructure remains the team's responsibility; community and documentation are the listed support channels. Sockudo is distributed under the MIT license, and no paid plan structure is described. Choose it when protocol compatibility, replay and control over deployment matter more than a managed service. Teams seeking hosted operations or support beyond community resources should consider alternatives that explicitly provide those arrangements.
