Our verdict on Snort
Snort is an open-source network intrusion detection and prevention system from Cisco. It monitors network traffic, analyzes packets with configurable rules, generates alerts for detected malicious activity, and can operate inline to block matching traffic. The product is suited to home networks, educational environments, laboratories, businesses, nonprofits, universities, government agencies, and consultancies that need software-based network monitoring on Linux self-hosted deployments. Its scope is centered on network traffic rather than a broader security platform.
The free Snort software and Community Ruleset are available without charge, providing the core engine for detection and prevention. The Personal plan costs $29.99 USD per sensor per year, billed annually, and adds a ruleset available immediately upon release, coverage in advance of exploit, false-positive and false-negative submission, and support for home network or educational use. The Business plan costs $399 USD per sensor per year, billed annually. It adds a ruleset developed for NGIPS customers and priority response for false positives and rules, with intended use across production or lab sensor deployments and organizations such as businesses, nonprofits, universities, government agencies, and consultancies. These paid tiers are subscriptions to the Snort Subscriber Rule Set rather than to the core engine.
Snort’s technical coverage includes real-time network traffic analysis, intrusion detection and prevention rules, inline traffic blocking, packet sniffing, packet logging, packet-capture and PCAP analysis, and SSL/TLS state and version inspection. Users can choose between Community Rules and Cisco Talos subscriber rules, giving the product a clear path from no-cost detection to paid rule coverage. Snort is a strong fit for teams comfortable downloading, configuring, and deploying Linux security software. Organizations seeking a broader platform than a focused, self-hosted network sensor should consider a different category of tool.
