Snipe-IT is a web-based IT asset management system for organizations tracking hardware, software licenses, accessories, users, locations, and asset history. Its workflows cover assignment, check-in, checkout, transfers, audits, requests, barcode scanning, QR-code labels, license expiration alerts, notifications, and reporting. The open-source product supports self-hosted deployment as well as vendor-managed hosting, with web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, and API access. It suits IT teams that want unlimited assets without tying the system to a per-asset limit.

Pricing is structured around a free Self-Hosted plan with unlimited users, unlimited assets, and community support. Basic Hosting costs $39.99 per month or $399.99 per year and adds automated upgrades, server maintenance, email support, and 120 API calls per minute. Small Business Hosting costs $99.99 per month or $999.99 per year, with 240 API calls per minute and increased LDAP memory and syncs per day. Dedicated Hosting (small) adds a private server, VPN connectivity, and unlimited API calls subject to hardware limitations; its annual plan is also listed. Paid hosting is the better fit for teams that want operational maintenance handled for them.

Integration and access controls are central strengths. Snipe-IT supports Active Directory, LDAP, Google Secure LDAP, SCIM, role-based permissions, granular access controls, CSV import and export, and a JSON REST API. Slack and Microsoft Teams notifications, plus connections with JAMF, Jira, RMM systems, and MDM systems, help it fit into established IT workflows. However, its focus is narrower around inventory and lifecycle records than platforms with deeper contract tracking and discovery capabilities. Choose Snipe-IT for open-source control, unlimited assets, and barcode-driven tracking; consider an alternative if contract management or broader automated discovery is a primary requirement.

Snipe-IT pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Unlimited assets and users across self-hosted and hosted plans
    • Barcode, QR-code, license, audit, and asset-history workflows
    • LDAP, SCIM, API, Slack, Teams, JAMF, and Jira integrations
  • Where it doesn't
    • Contract tracking and discovery are narrower than broader ITAM suites
    • Self-hosting requires organizations to manage their own environment
    • Higher hosting tiers are needed for more API capacity and private servers
