Our verdict on SMS Backup & Restore

SMS Backup & Restore is an Android app from SyncTech Pty Ltd for preserving SMS, MMS messages and call logs. It stores backups in XML format, either locally or through supported cloud destinations. Users can schedule recurring backups, select individual conversations, search backup contents, transfer data between phones over Wi-Fi Direct, and restore messages or call logs. It is suited to Android users who need focused protection for messaging history and call records rather than a broad device or computer backup system.

The free plan covers the core workflow: SMS, MMS and call-log backups, local storage with optional cloud uploads, and scheduled backups. Upload destinations include Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive and email. The Pro plan costs US$7.49 as a one-time purchase according to the published plan details. It adds backup compression, AES-256 encryption, WebDAV as a backup location, and removes ads. The vendor's official page also lists AUD 8.99 through its checkout, so storefront and regional pricing can differ.

Its main strength is a narrow, practical feature set for message and call-log continuity. Conversation-level selection, backup search, Wi-Fi Direct transfers and restoration from local or cloud backups give users control over what moves between phones. The trade-off is equally clear: the app covers Android and file-level backups for SMS, MMS and call logs, not computers, servers or broader device data. Choose it if those records are the backup priority and scheduled cloud copies are enough. Choose an alternative if you need cross-platform coverage or protection for a wider range of files and device content.
