Our verdict on SmarterMail
SmarterMail is a self-hosted mail and collaboration server for businesses, individuals, web hosts, and ISPs. It runs on Windows or Linux servers and combines SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 with browser-based webmail, calendars, contacts, tasks, and notes. Its audience includes organizations that want to manage mail infrastructure directly while keeping access to familiar clients such as Microsoft Outlook, eM Client, Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird, along with iOS and Android devices.
The published plans give small deployments a meaningful starting point. The Free edition supports one domain and up to 10 mailboxes, while including most Enterprise features. Professional licenses are annual: $500 for 50 mailboxes, $650 for 250, $900 for 500, $1,300 for 1,000, $1,500 for 2,000, and $1,800 for unlimited mailboxes. Professional includes standard POP, IMAP, DAV, WebDAV, CalDAV, and CardDAV protocols. Enterprise starts at $700 annually for 50 mailboxes and adds advanced MAPI, EWS, and EAS options. A 30-day free trial is also available.
Feature breadth is a central reason to consider SmarterMail. Multi-layer antispam and antivirus scanning, CalDAV and CardDAV synchronization, REST and web-service automation, and high-availability clustering with automated failover cover more than basic mail delivery. The trade-off is that the broader deployment model requires careful plan selection: mobile push synchronization through EAS is an Enterprise add-on, active Maintenance and Support is required for Professional and Enterprise licenses, and High Availability uses monthly hub/node pricing. SmarterMail suits teams that value self-hosted control, collaboration features, and scalable mailbox licensing. Organizations seeking a simpler hosted service or a smaller feature set should look elsewhere.
