Our verdict on Slint

Slint is a declarative GUI toolkit for developers building native desktop, mobile, web and embedded applications. Teams describe interfaces in the Slint UI language and connect them to business logic in Rust, C++, JavaScript/TypeScript or Python. Its shared UI codebase and native compilation make it relevant when a product must span desktop and embedded devices without maintaining separate interface implementations. It also targets Android, iOS and WebAssembly, so it can suit teams with a wider platform remit.

The framework combines native machine-code compilation and operating-system API access with responsive layouts, Material 3 components and live preview with real-time property editing. GUI test automation and CI integration support automated interface checks, while language-server integrations cover editors including Visual Studio Code, Qt Creator, Kate, Helix, Vim, Neovim, Sublime Text, JetBrains IDEs and Zed. This breadth is useful for teams working across languages and toolchains, though it also means Slint is a framework for developers prepared to define UI declaratively and connect it to application logic, rather than a ready-made app builder.

Licensing is a central selection factor. GPLv3 covers open-source applications; the Community License covers desktop, mobile and web applications with Slint attribution required. Startup & Individual licenses proprietary applications and includes Live Preview. Small Enterprise adds standard support, while Enterprise includes standard support and a perpetual fallback license. Commercial embedded projects use the Embedded royalty option, listed at $1 per device one time, with volume discounts available. Paid license prices are sales-led. Slint fits teams that value shared native UI across embedded and desktop targets and can align with its licensing terms; teams seeking published commercial plan prices or an attribution-free community option should compare alternatives.
