Our verdict on SlickEdit
SlickEdit is a cross-platform code editor and development environment centered on C++ and other programming languages. It is aimed at developers who want one commercial desktop application for editing, project work, debugging, builds, code formatting, and version control. Installations are supported on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Raspberry Pi. For Go IDE buyers, the key consideration is fit: the documented feature set and positioning focus on C++, while Go-specific IDE support is not established here.
Pricing is split between two one-time-purchase editions. SlickEdit Standard costs $125 and includes syntax expansion and indenting, SmartPaste, keystroke emulations, multiple cursors and selections, Backup History, and macro recording. SlickEdit Pro costs $299 and adds symbol analysis and navigation, debuggers, integrated builds, beautifiers, version-control support, and JUnit integration. A 15-day trial is available, but there is no free plan. The price difference is therefore tied to project and debugging capabilities rather than a recurring subscription tier.
The strongest case for SlickEdit is its breadth for C++ workflows. Pro supports GDB and Clang C/C++ LLDB debugging, remote debugging through GDB, integrated build and compile commands, and CMake project opening, building, tagging, and debugging. It also integrates with Git, Subversion, CVS, Mercurial, Perforce, and ClearCase, with file and folder comparison and merging included among its capabilities. Choose SlickEdit if you need mature commercial C++ tooling across multiple desktop platforms and are comfortable with a one-time license. Choose another product if your priority is a clearly documented Go-first IDE or a free plan.
