Our verdict on Skulpt

Skulpt is an open-source JavaScript implementation of Python that compiles Python code into JavaScript and runs it entirely in the browser. It is aimed at developers creating browser-based education, interactive coding exercises, and embedded Python editors. The project includes the runtime required to execute generated code, plus a standard-library bundle, so it can serve as a building block for learning tools and demos rather than a hosted commercial coding environment.

Its main strength is the combination of browser embedding and execution features. Developers can embed Skulpt directly in HTML pages, use browser execution APIs such as importMainWithBody, and add custom Python modules. The included modules cover areas such as turtle, math, time, urllib, unittest, image, DOM, and re. That scope gives projects a range of options for interactive exercises and browser-based Python experiences. Command-line tooling for build, run, test, and distribution also supports work beyond the embedded page itself.

Skulpt supports Python 2 compatibility and Python 3 configuration, so a project can align its setup with the Python version it needs to support. Its open-source model makes it a fit for solo developers and small teams that want to incorporate browser-based Python execution into their own projects. The tradeoff is its specific browser-execution focus: teams seeking a hosted commercial product or a broadly positioned execution service should look elsewhere. Community and documentation are the stated support channels, so Skulpt is best suited to builders comfortable integrating and maintaining an open-source project.
